CHEVALIER’S WORKS
To Be Hung In National Art Gallery Among the art works that are to grace the walls of the National Art Gallery at Wellington, are those of M. Chevalier, who was attached to the party which accompanied the Duke of Edinburgh to New Zealand in 1868. These clever pen and pencil drawings and water-colours were presented to the New Zealand Government a quarter of a century ago by the widow of the artist. They were rediscovered some six years ago among the archives in the cellar of the Government Buildings much the worse for their long incarceration, and on the suggestion of the late Mr. Louis Cohen, of Wanganui, were placed in the hands of Mr. H. Newrick, a skilful restorer. Since then they have been on exhibition in the Sarjeant gallery. M. Chevalier was a master draughtsman as well as an artist, and there are enough drawings and water-colours to fill one of the smaller galleries in the new building.
