DELPHINIUMS

Protect the Crowns Delphiniums have a weak spot which enemies aren’t slow to find. It is their crowns, which lie about an inch below the surface of the soil. Slugs attack them and, if the weather is very wet, a foot rot fungus gets in and converts them to pulp. The plants can be safeguarded at this vulnerable spot by now covering the crowns and the ground Ift. on all sides of them with a 2in. layer of small sharp cinders. These serve the double function of assisting percolation, thus keeping out the foot rots and making it impossible for slugs to burrow.

About mid-winter you will find it necessary to renew the cinders.
