WORLD TITLE BOUT
Boxing Champion to Fight In Australia Chicago, March 4. It is announced that Barney Ross will defend his welterweight title in Australia early in May. It is understood that Ross has been guaranteed 45,000 dollars for a title bout. An Australian promoter will select his opponent. A Sydney cable on February 23 stated that the promoter of the Sportsground boxing contests, Mr. Charles Lucas, had cabled Barney Ross, world welterweig.it champion, agreeing to Ins terms of £BOOO for a title fight against Jack Carroll at Sydney next summer. PROMOTER’S STATEMENT (Received March 5, 8.55 p.m.) Sydney, March 5. Mr. referring to today's Chicago cable, said he had been corresponding with Ross concerning a title fight with Jack Carroll. . He had agreed to Ross’s terms, which were not quite the same as mentioned in the cable, but were approximately that sum. It would be impossible to arrange the fight for May as that month would be unsuitable for open-air boxing. He would go to America to complete negotiations for the title fight, but it would take place next summer.
