ATHLETIC TITLES

Sharpley’s Good Time In Hurdles SHIELD TO OTAGO Cameron Takes Four Championships By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin. February 29. The New Zealand amateur athletic championships concluded to-day. Rain early this morning made the tracks lather heavy, and although the times were not sensational, generally the performances were good. There was an attendance of about 5000 and the meeting concluded in drizzling rain. Otago won the championship shield with 53 points. Canterbury gained 42, Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay 27. Wellington 11. Auckland live and West Coast (North Island) two. Otago owes its win chielly to the great performance of A. A. Cameron, who lifted no fewer than four titles, the discus throw, broad jump, putting the shot and hop, step and jump. In the grand parade Otago was placed first with 86j points, Hawke's BayPoverty Bay second with 80, and ■Wellington third with 71. This parade of more than 100 athletes drawn from all six controlling centres in New Zealand was reminiscent on a smaller scale of the brilliant display marking the inauguration of the 1932 Olympiad at Los Angeles. The procession was headed by the band of the Otago Regiment, and, upon reaching the stand, R. Creeser, a former javelin champion, maunted the dais, raising his hand, which action was followed by the whole procession for swearing the oath of amateurism in accordance with Olympic Games custom. Mr. G. Tapley, president of the local centre, then declared the meeting open, this being heralded by a fanfare of truriipets, the release of a thousand pigeons and the breaking out of the New Zealand Ensign. ’ Detailed results of the events are as follow 120 YARD SHURDLES. STERLING CONTESTS

Well-organised Meeting Marred by Rain Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, February 29. All hope of a five-figure gate at the national athletie championships to-day faded when drizzly rain started this morning, but the attendance of five thousand saw sterling contests. Outstanding performances were registered by F. Sharpley, New Zealand representative at the Centenary Games, who won the 120 and 220 yards hurdles, equalling the New Zealand record each time. His run of 15 l-ssec. in the high hurdles* equalled the figures set by H. E. Wilson and R. W. Lander, but is not likely to be passed, owing to the track not being level. To record this time on a wet track stamps Sharpley as a fine hurdler. P. Bowie, Wellington’s title-holder, ran the best race of his life to be placed second to Sharpley in the 120 yards. The impressive opening ceremony based on the Olympic model, seems certain to be adopted for future meetings. Brian Tapley, brother of the Otago president, and of the film star, Colin Tapley, although short in stature and heavy of limb, Outsprinted the field in the 100 yards to beat the .Gisborne representative Quinn, and Macfarlane. His win in ten seconds was full of merit, and drew forth great enthusiasm from the crowd. Quinn, who was fancied for the short sprint, ran another fine trace to win the furlong from Maefarlane and Bainbridge in 22 l-osec. Quinn takes the eye as likely to develop into New Zealand’s best sprinter in years. The quarter-mile saw a surprise win by Tyrie, of Otago, after a desperate battle with his team-mate Price, who won ■the Wellington championship two weeks ago. Bainbridge was fancied with Broadway for this event, but ran a shocking race and faded right out of the picture at 350 yards, where Broadway, who had lost ground, began to make up leeway, finishing fast to get within a yard of the first two men. V. P. Boot, winner of the mile on the first day, ran an excellent half-anile to defeat Broadway and' Allen in lmin. 55 3-ssec„ the fastest time for a.New Zealand championship. Although successful, and with the makings of a good runner, Boot has no idea of tactics. Effortless Running. C. Matthews won the three miles from Pullar and Geddes by virtue of better equipment' in staying power and pace. Effortless to a degree, he ran lap after lap, gradually drawing away from Pullar, who endeavoured to hold him, and eventually winning by 200 yards. The winner of the 100 yards women’s title, I. Campbell, ,of Hamilton, is_ a tall, well-developed girl with possibilities. A surprise was the running of A. Gibbs, the Wellington representative, who defeated two favourites, G. iSymes and K. Callinan. She showed a vast improvement on her Wellington form. A. Cameron, who won two events on Friday, accounted for two more to-day, winning the hop, step and jump and shot putt. Cameron’s feat of winning four titles at a national meeting has only been better by Arthur Holder, who in 1897 won four titles, and was placed second in another. Cameron would probably have won the high jump had he entered, as three men tied at oft. 6in., Crowe winning the jumpoff to retain the title. In the jump-off for second place, Borrie actually cleared one inch higher than Crowe. C. P. Clegg took over, Lay’s mantle by throwing the javelin 195 ft. UJin., a distance only bettered' twice by lay in championships. M. Spillane and J. Leckie, two wellknown hammer-throwers, monopolised the hammer event. Driscoll once again took honours m the mile walk. The Wellington team, with the exception of Miss Gibbs, did not show the form anticipated, although Fitzsimmons, who had been 'suffering from a cold, ran well in the heats of the sprints. Crowe injured a shoulder in landing (luring the high jump, 'but it was nothing serious. Otago’® win of the Championship Shield Is the first for thirty years, and coming on the high standard of the organisation should do much to consolidate the position of the sport in the district, where most of the national sporting trophies now rest. The meeting was voted the best organised for many years, bnt was marred by the climatic conditions.
