WEEK-END YACHTING
Big Programme at Evans Bay ANOTHER LIGHT BREEZE Light breezes again prevailed on Saturday afternoon, when the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club sailed races for all clauses. The gentle southerly had the virtue of steadiness, however, aud the last keeler was home before half-past eix. As was expected in the weather, there were small entries in the keeler events — two the first-class race, which was for the commodore's challenge cup, and three in the second class, which was for the Holmes trophy. By iiutehing on about two minutes and a half behind the scratch boat, Viola, Romp, with six minutes, won the first-class race, while the Holme.) trophy went to Rawene (61min.), which finished only lmin. 22sec. behind Arawa (scr.), with Muritai close up ou corrected times.
Five started in the Ronu boat race, which wns twice round the Point Jerning-ham-Fraser Rock course, for points for the Levin Cup, and there was little changing of the order from start: to finish. At the end of the first lap Tussle Jed from Kitty, Idono, June and JannCt, which started very late, mid in that order they finished. The 14-footers. which sailed the same course for George Cup pointe, provided an interesting race. The scratch boat, Kotare, led from soon after the start, but in the last lap she was overhauled by Advance, which finished first by nearly a minute. At the commencement of the second round Kotare was 10 seconds ahead of Advance, followed by Kio 11, Rob Roy, Ariki hud Phantom, Southern Maid retiring. Both Advance aud Kotare Were robbed of victory by Kio 11, which finished third, showing a big improvement in form, and with eight minutes’ handicap was a good first. Advance gained, and Ariki, also with eight minutes, was third.
Gladys was the early leader in the Idle Along race, which was sailed over the Kio Bay course, wijh points for the Ramsay Cup at stake. Gladys fouled Mayfair near Kio Bay the second time round, and Mayfair Jed the fleet, closely chased by Vampire, Pegaway being third home. Handicaps, however, gave the places to Altair, which liad 14 minutes, Dorothy (7min.) and Dora (-linin.). The Q and Z race, in which there were only two starters, both off scratch, was not very interesting. Dainfino led all the way from Mono, which seemed over-can-vassed, and won by 18 minutes. Imp, Sea Hawk and Matchbox were the first three home in the seven-footer race, but on handicaps victory went to Midge (Smin.l, with Betty (3min.) second and Matchbox third.
