EASTERN HUTT SCHOOL

The beautiful grounds at Eastern Hutt School presented a gay spectacle on Saturday afternoon when a fete, organised by the school committee and the headmaster, Mr. H. N. Benson, and his staff, assisted by parents, took place. Mr. TV. L. Hooson, chairman of the school- committee, introduced Mr. W. V. Dyer, chairman of the Wellington Education Board, who opened the bazaar. Mr. Dyer spoke of the importance of a beautiful environment in the l>fe of the child, and said that it was necessary to hold efforts for the upkeep of the grounds, lie congratulated the committee, staff and parents on the success of the fete. Trees provided pleasant shelter, and the wide lawns, shrubbery and gay flower borders made an attractive picture in the afternoon sunlight. Flagg were effectively used in idecorafion, and (the fauey dreSs parade, in which a large number of children partieiplatcd, was a picturesque scene. The maypole dance was a delight, the small girls, who hhd been trained by Mrs. H. Mitchell, wearing fancy costumes in the school colours. 'l’ljcrc was also an exhibition of drill by the boys, and many competitions, which were well patronised. Afternoon tea was set on small tables in one of the classrooms. . Mrs. J. AV. Andrews, Mayoress of Lower Hutt, and Mrs. J. Mitchell were the judges of the fancy dresses, and awarded the prizes as follow: —Boys, "Dick Whittington” (Peter Hickson), 1. Girls, “Dresden Lady” (Lorraine Ford), 1. Most original, “Shell Bowser” (Graham Cook); special prizes, "Mae West” (Bose Curry) ; “Early Victorian” (Joe Teasdel); “Mistletoe and Holly” (Winsome Bowe and Colin Perrvjt; “Seeds” (Shirley Sinclair and Brenda Sinclair); “Hawaiian” (Valerie Bird); “The Bride” (Judith Collins) ; consolation prize, “Three Blind Mice” (Cliff Mason, Alan Witberall, Laurie Carroll) ; “John Feel” (isocline Cameron) ; ’‘Maori Chief’ (Olga Power); “Indian Chief” (Jack Beustead) ; “Boxes” (Peter Currie) ; “Scarlet Pimpernel” (Keith Jacobsen) : “Wild Bose” (Dorothy Grant-Taylor). For the decorated vehicles, which were judged by Mrs. 0. Balls and Mrs. Hammond, the prizes were as follow : —Albert Turner, 1: AV. Skipper, 2; * special prize, Joan Hardcastle; consolation prizes, Billy Cropp, Keith Smith, Ken Fenton, Naomi Turner. W. Smith. 'Pho stalls were as follow Produce, Mcsdames Hoosou, Lines, Andrews, Strickhind ; variclj stall, Mcsdames Dudding, Cox. Webster; sweets, Mesdiimwi Flux, A. (I. Smith. Heudenson; cake stall. Mcsdames Bond, Balls, Hardcastle, Mollford: ice cream, Miss Wright, .Messrs. A. G. Smith, Flux, Hester; afternoon ten. women teachers.
