SCHOOL GARDEN FETES
Large Numbers of People Present Parents and friends were present in large numbers at the Hutt Central School on Saturday afternoon, when the annua fete took place. Plugs were suspended overhead, and the grounds, with their lawns and flower-beds, were a pleasant setting. Mr. H. Miller, headmaster of the school, welcomed those present, and congratulated those who had worked so hard in various capacities. Mr. .T. TV. Andrews, Mayor of Lower Hutt, introduced the Hou. J’. Fraser uud the Hon. TV. Nash, and remarked that it was the first time the former bad appeared in the valley in his oilicial capacity. ~ , Mr. Fraser referred <o the excellent work of the school committees and parents, and of its necessity in furthering the education of the children throughout the Dominion. Mr. Nash expressed pleasure at being present, and stated that the work of the school committee and the parents very materially assisted Mr. Fraser in his task as Minister of Education. Mr. Nash said that it was his hope that, the children, through the educational facilities they enjoyed, should be fitted to live life to the full. ~, . .. Mrs. Nash, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Fraser were presented with bouquets, the work of Miss N. Garrett, who was also responsible for the tearoom decorations. The well-stocked stalls bore testimony to the weeks of preparation, and were well patronised. On the work stall were attractive children's garments, dolls m cosy woollen garments, and dainty fancywork. Under the trees, the Hutt Municipal Band played bright selections. The side-shows went with a swing, and Charlie the Clown had u large follow’iug of juvenile admirers. Afternoon tea, set on tables in the classrooms, was well patronised. The decorations in one room were of purple asters, those ou the official table, with its delicate heliotrope scabious and maidenhair fern, beiug particularly effective. The decorations in the other room were of yellow sunflowers. The school committee and parents’ association organised the fete, with the assistance of the staff. Mr. Millard tvas .the manager, Mr. A. Taylor secretary, and Mr. G. Lockwood treasurer. Mrs.- W. Nash and Mrs. H. Miller were the judges of the fancy dresses, their decision beiug as follows -Boy or girl undor school age: "Orange and Green, (Jocelyn Cairns), 1; “Moon and Stars (Esmay Giles), 2; two specials, Shirley Christophers and Joyce Mitchel. Schoolboy or girl: “Grass” (Patricia Osborne), 1; “Mandarin ” (Jim Nation), 2; specials, Peter Cross, Margaret McCallum, Colin Slade. Decorated prams: Pat Aldridge. Tricycle: Albert Hosie. Decorated bicycle: Patricia Arnold; two specials, Jean Shirley, Pat Goss. The conveners of the various stalls were as follow: Fancy stall, Mrs. Mair; produce stall, Mrs. Finneston; book stall, Mr Palmer; ice-cream and drinks, Mrs. Macaskill; cake and sweets, bran-tub and jumble, women teachers; side-shows, Mr. Cains and helpers; afternoon tea, Mesdames Cains and Lockwood; gatekeepers, Messrs Horrobin and Harding; Punch and Judy, Mr. Haverfield.
