MIGHT WINS WELL

Marlborough Club’s First Day ONE RACE WITHDRAWN Dominion Special Service. Blenheim, February 29. The Marlborough Racing Club opened its summer meeting at IVaterlea this atternoon in bright sunshine. 3.he attendance was fairly good, but the small holds did not encourage any spread of betting. The original programme of six races was reduced to five by the withdrawal of the Leefield Handicap. Two of the four acceptors did not attend the meeting, and the owners of the other two, as an act of "race to assist the club, scratched their horses. The club substituted a two-year-old parade. The totalisator handled £2271/10/- for the five races, compared with £1330/10/- for seven races at the 1934 meeting and £2oBl/10/- for seien races last May. Successful Turf Debut. Top Notch, a Stonyhurst-bred filly by Day Comet, making her turf debut, led all the way in the Maiden Stakes, for which she was favourite. Gasmask and Myriam took her on for half a mile, but she had them settled a furlong from home and won easily. She ran very truly for an inexperienced juvenile, and, being well grown and allowed time to develop, she should be beard from again before the flat season closes. Gasmask was easily second from who apparently is not much S°ofl- The pawnbroker, a four-year-old Rabbi o eldin p , looks a good sort, but was above himself in condition. Another for Cliokebore Lodge. Chokebore Lodge scored its second consecutive win when Rival Shot led the field home in the Pelorus Hack Handicap. She looked a good thing on her Dunedin form, and won very easily. .She was always in front from The Sandwich Man and Going Gay, the latter finishing well for second with Consummation placed third and The Sandwich Man fourth. Ihe judge appeared in a quandary over the minor placing®, and did not hoist the numbers until the horses had returned to the birdcage. Going Gay ran a good race without ever appearing likely to challenge the winner. Consummation was very sore, and under the circumstances ran a good race Pegged Exchange played up at the start and tailed the field throughout. Buried the Field. The President’s Handicap was won nicely by Might, who survived interference from Locksley and then buried the field for speed over the last 100 yards. Darecourt and Kalmuck made most of the pace. Locksley displaced Kalmuck at the home turn and rolled tn on Might at the distance. Once Might got clear he quickly settled the'issue, winning nicely by a long neck from Locksley, who beat Darecourt by half a length was well up fourth and Miladi last. Might finished generously under his big weight. Locksley was well conditioned, and only for getting unbalanced a furlong from home might have won. Darecourt ran well in open company. Miladi was beaten at the end of six furlongs. Easy for Gasmask. Gasmask won the Trial-Plate veryeasily. He ran to the front with half the journey covered, and Lowater, the favourite. could make no impression on him over the final furiong. Myriam was third. The class was extremely poor. Pegged Exchange All the Way. The concluding event was won all the way by Pegged Exchange, who .was the outsider of the field. He looked like playing up again at the barrier, so Mr. Price effected a snap start from which Pegged Exchange bounded to the front and though challenged by Brown Pearl and Imasurvey, be hung on to score by half a length from Brown Pearl with Imasurvey third, then Contract and Lowater. Brown Pearl did the best of those apart from the winner. ' Contract, who was nearly as well backed as Brown Pearl, ran a poor race. Details of the Racing By Telegraph—Press Association.
