TE AROHA RACES

Bonny Gay Pays Big Dividend CUP TO NUN NICER H. N. Wiggins Suspended For Three Months Dominion Special Service. Te Arolia, February 29. Keen racing featured the opening of the Te Arolia Jockey Club A meeting today. The weather was fine and the course excellent. Most of the winners were well supported, but there were several kihprisee, Bonny Gay paying over a third of a century when t'he scored in the Hot Springe Handicap. There was a record crowd. The totalisator investments were £33.280/10/-, an increase of £7ISO. compared with the first day last year. H. N. Wiggins, riding Happy Landing in the Cup, was suspended for three months for careless riding, causing interference to Gay Broney at the start." Soloist Convincing. The topweight Soloist proved a class above the others in the Ruakaka Hurdles and carried his 12.0 to a very convincing victory. While Tea Chat and London were making play early Soloist was well back and he did not become prominent until about half a mile from home, where he was travelling particularly well. Soloist jumped to the front from Tea Chat, London and Semiarch at the last fence and drew away to score by. five lengths from Sandy Dix, who came from a long way back to just outstay Semiarch for second. London was a close fourth, followed by Tea Chat and Prince of Orange, who was putting in good work at the end. Solomon unseated bis rider at the second fence. Gay Defence Shows Form. The favourite Sweet Rose made a good bid for victory in the Waitou Handicap, but she was decisively beaten by Gay Defence, who came with a tine run to win going away. Gallant Knight, King Theo, Sweet Rose and Little Artist were quickly prominent, Sweet Rose being in command at the turn from Little Artist, Red Flame and Gallant Knight. Gay Defence came on the scene in the laist furlong and ie ijt last showing the good form he has displayed in training. Sweet Rose ran another good race, ai)d King Theo showed definite improvement, paying a fine place dividend. Misurina, eloser at . the finish than at any other stage, was fourth, followed by La Femme Noire und Little Artist. who may be all the better for the race. Clear-cut Win. The improving Ned Cuttie recorded a clear-cut victory in the Juvenile Handicap, for which Inver was favourite. . Golden Blonde and Ned Cuttle were hooij at the bead of the field and they wele the leaders into the straight from. Inter, Maxown and Gay Chief. Once in line for the post Golden Blonde began to weaken and Inver challenged, while Mgxown also made an effort over the last furlong. Ned Cuttie drew away and won "by two lengths from Inver, with Gay Chief finishing fast in third position, just beating Maxown. The next to finish were Goldeu Sheila, Cricket and Athea. The first and second are promising gallopers giid Inver should do better as he matures. Maxown looked likely at the distance, but did not go on as well as anticipated, although his rider did not knock him about when be was beaten. Gay Chief shaped well. Cricket was finishing ou, and Queens Counsel‘was never sighted. Nun Nicer Brilliant. The each-way favourite, Nun" Nicer, scored a brilliant "win in the Herries Memorial Handicap, coming right away at the finish after being in the lead most of the way with Killadar. The field left to a good start, Killadar and Nun Nicer going to the front quickly, and being together in front at the home turn from Prince Colossus, Royal Appellant, and Duy Wind, who were abreast, ahead of Happy Landing. Nothing had a chance with Nun Nicer, and he won by two and a half lengths from Prince Colossus. Huge, uear the rear, early struck some trouble in the middle stages, and did well to be a close third, just cutting Happy Landing out of that position. Next to finish were Kelly, Lagoon, and Day Wind- , ' The unlucky horse was I'lnge, who finished on splendidly. Gay Broney struck some trouble early. Royal Appellant and Day Wind'were well in the picture for a mile and a quarter, and then faded. Finished Well. Capably handled by L. J. Ellis, Torch finished well to win the Shaftesbury Handicap, He was not prominent till the straight w'as reached, when he wore down the leader, Valspear, to win by half a length. . Valspear was out iu front with Teak and Bonnie Song most of the way, and ran up to his best form, only weakening at the end. Kilberis was always bandy and ran on well for third, ii neck a.way, with Mungacre, who appeared a likely place-getter at the distance, a good fourth. Bonnie Song-was next ahead of . Supreme Court and Q ua ' nti Fleetwind was badly left and Dombey was never dangerous. Win for Outsider. The outsider, Bonny Gay, scored decisively in the Hot Springs Handicap. She was patiently handled by R. Savage, and, after following Sir Nigel, Beau Gallante, Koval Secret. After Money, and Adalene, finished strongly on the rads to win by two lengths and a half from Royal Secret, who swung a little wide at the turn, but fought on well to beat After Money by a neck. Scotch Nation made a good effort in the straight to finish fourth with Tin Lap, Adalene, Beau Gallante. and Keith Lu next. Beau Gallante appeared to be going particularly well at the straight entrance, but failed to run on, and was well beaten. Sir Nigel also stopped badly in the run home. Con Fuoco Impresses. It was with a fine finishing effort that Con Fuoco won the Champion Hack Cup. He was a long way back at the turn for home, but reaching the front a furlong from home won nicely half a length from Valrent. who battled on well after being in the leading division throughout. Light Comedy finished very fast in third place, a similar distance away, and appeared rather unlucky, as she was wide out behind the leaders, Pound Sterling, and Valrent, entering the straight. Arawa Rose was also staying on solidly in fourth plac,. with Pukeko who struck trouble along the back, and was, awkwardly placed for the greater part of the journey. next. ■ . Mafeking was in the picture till the fitraigbt waa reached, but failed to run on, while Tidalia was never dangerous. Te Broney was slow to beg'n.. and was tailed off throughout. King Brierly, who failed to complete the course, was very lame on returning to the birdcage. Easy for Coronis.

Finishing in splendid style. Ceron’s registered a decisive win in the Waihaa Handicap. , , Wahine Keihi appeared to have the race

in hand a furlong from the post, but she failed to hold off the winner, who confirmed her form at Te Rapa. Refresfivr was running on in third place a length away, and Royal Dance was fourth. Galilee made the running to the straight entrance from Royal Dance, Boughal. Wahine Reihi, and Rereatu, but faded out in the straight. Rereatu was fifth, with Bellbroney and Galilee next.
