R.N.V.R. DUTIES

Inspection Made by ViceAdmiral Harper An inspection of the Wellington Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve was made this week by Vice-Ad-miral J. E. T. Harper, who visited the. gunnery, mine-sweeping and seamanship classes at the division’s headquarters in Hinemoa Street. In a short address to the men ViceAdmiral Harper expressed pleasure at seeing such an efficient organisation and said he had always been impressed by the manner in which the R.N.V.R. had carried out its duties. He reminded them that auxiliary naval services were absolutely necessary for the maintenance of the Empire and said that the work the reservists were doing was of real value to the Imperial Navy. Vice-Admiral Harper emphasised that loyalty, as typified by the flag, was the only means of keeping the Empire together, and if all the Dominions would keep this in mind the Empire would prosper. He said the memory of Lord Nelson was reverenced not because he won battles, but because of his observance of duty to his country. Lord Jellicoe had also looked upon his country first and the speaker believed that the children of to-day would look upon Jellicoe as Nelson was now regarded.
