Buried by Fall of Earth

Dominion • Special Service. Wanganui, February 28. An inquest into the death of Kehar Singh, aged 46, who was killed by a landslide at Okirae Station, Fordcll, on Wednesday, was held before Mr. S. M. Dixon yesterday, who returned a verdict that deceased met his death by being buried by a fall of earth. Giving evidence, Gur Singh, aged 17, said his father wjis preparing the midday meal at their camp on Wednesday morning. A landslide occurred and he ran outside together with Ratan Singh, the other occupant of the camp. They succeeded in getting clear of the debris, and searched for Kehar Singh, but could not find him. When the slip was cleared away there was still no trace ol him. The body was subsequently found in several feet of earth, feet uppermost. Deceased was a native of Punjab, India, and bad been in New Zealand ott and on for 23 years. Substantiative evidence was given by Ratan Singh. John McDougall, manager for Mr. K. Campion, at Okirae Station, said he helped to clear the slips, and that the body was found face downward in a creek. Constable Rogers said he proceeded to Fordell to take charge of the body. Death appeared to be due to suffocation.
