TOWN HALL CLOCK

Possible Re-erection Over New Fire Station

HARBOUR BOARD INTEREST / The possibility of the clock which was presented to the capital city by the late Mr. John Blundell being installed in a tower over the new fire brigade station in Clyde Quay was mentioned at a meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board last night. The clock has remained in storage since it was removed from the Town Hall when alterations were made to that building. The necessity for a clock which could be seen from the waterfront was emphasised by Mr. M. A. Eliott. He said it had occurred to him that the board might consider erecting a clock to the memory of the late Mr. William Ferguson, who was recognised as the father of the port. ■ A suitable place would be one of the bluffs at Oriental Bay—which could be seen from the whole of the waterfront. “It is quite on the cards that the new fire station will house a clock,” said Mr. A. Fletcher. "I know that Mr. W. H. Bennett recently brought a proposal before the Fire Board. It'is suggested that the tower of the proposed new fire station should be raised and a clock installed. I know the Fire Board has been going into question, and there is some talk of strengthening the tower. Whether any decision has been come to I don’t know. From what I understand from Mr. Bennett and others, the range of vision there will be great—greater than what it was when the clock was installed in the Town Hall.” Mr. W. H. Price: Which clock are you' referring to? Mr. Fletcher: The Blundell clock. The chairman, Mr. T. R. Barter, said steps would be taken to ascertain whether it was proposed seriously to erect a clock over the new lire station, and the information would be conveyed to members of the board. It*had been suggested that one way of perpetuating the memory of the late Mr. Ferguson would be to name one of the new wharves after him.
