W.C.T.U. Meets

The Wellington branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union recently held their first meeting for the new year, Miss C. B. Kirk, J.P., presiding. A vote of sympathy was passed with the Royal Family on the death of King George V, all present standing in silence. Mrs. Murray conducted the devotional period and then proposed a welcome to the new president, which was heartily given. Accounts were passed for payment. The hospital visiting days for the coming year were announced, and several volunteers offered for the work of visiting the sick.

Superintendents were elected for the different departments ae follow: Mrs. Murray, evangelistic; Mrs. Harris, hospital; Mrs. Perry, white ribbon; Mrs. Rowe, Press; tea committee, Mesdames James, Haylock and Casley; sick visitors, Mesdames Lee, Porte and Haylock. The delegate to convention being held in Auckland next month will be Mrs. H. J. Rowe. Tea was served, the pledge recited, and the meeting closed with the Benediction. Nursing Guild of St. John The first monthly meeting for the year 1936 of the District Nursing Guild of St. John, was held in the guild office, Mrs. A. Stace presiding. The committee are most grateful to Sister West for the able and kindly manner in which she has attended the patients in her relieving capacity. The staff now consists of four fully-trained registered nurses, and, also, many eases of nursing among the sick for poor are undertaken by the nurses of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in their small amount of spare time. The sisters reported busy days both in December and January, and are most grateful to the ladies of the transport auxiliary for driving them to the distant cases. The sisters would still be grateful for old white linen, as so many dressings are needed.

The outing for the patients to Day’s Bay is being arranged for the tint week in March. This is able to be held a s a result of the generous donations of the Commercial Travellers’ Association, the committee and friends.

On behalf of the Guild, Mrs. Stace, with officers of the commandery, brigade and association, met Colonel Sleeihan, deputy for the Duke of Connaught, Grand Prior of the Order, on his arrival in Wellington. Part of his work in his visitation was the inspection of the guild’s care of the sick poor of Wellington under the Order of St. John. After the meeting of the commandery, the colonel visited the guild rooms, where he inspected all matters connected with the work. The committee are grateful for donations to the guild from Miss 11. Davy, Miss Christie. Anon., Mrs. C. J. B. Norwood. “Jack,” Lady Myers, Mr. Smith, Grateful Patient, Miss Benbow, Mrs. Prince, Mrs. D. Barnes, K. and D. Barnes, Miss Atkins, Toe II League of Women Helpers, St. Andrew’s Bible Class, Mrs. and Miss Barltrop. Miss Boil, Mrs. Falconer, Mrs. J. Young, Miss Cox, Khandallah Sick Poor Guild, Mrs. F. Picot, Miss Moir, Miss Anyon and the children of the Junior Dominion League.

Miss Hester Nicholls, daughter of Mr. G. 11. Nicholls,'has been selected from a large number of applicants to fill the position of third assistant on the staff of Victoria University College library. Miss Nicholls was previously on the staff of the Wellington Public Library.
