LIVE STOCK MARKET

Firmer Tendency at Addington

By Telegraph—Press Association.

Christchurch, January 22.

Entries were smaller than last week at the weekly Addington market to-day, and there was a tendency toward firmer values in most classes of stock. Store lambs: About 4500 came forward as the result of good rains overnight, and the increase in the export schedule. There was aa improvement in the demand. Ewe lambs sold at up to 18/3 and mixed sexes to 18/-. Store sheep: Mostly whethers came forward and these sold firmly at up to 19/- for two-tooths. Fat lambs: 2000 odd were penned. The schedule for export has been increased by a farthing during the week and the sale was fully on a par with the advance. The sale was a good one. Fat sheep: 3500 were penned. Butchers’ wethers and ewes were better than last week by 1/- to 1/6 a head. Export ewes, for which xporters competed freely, were unchanged. Best wethers made to 26/10, prime heavy 23/- to 24/6, others 19/- to 22/6. Best ewes to 22/-, prime 18/- to 20/-, prime medium-weight 15/6 to 17/3, ordinary 12/- to 14/-, light to 11/6. j , Fat cattle: 410 were penned, only a few outstanding lines of young beef being included. These sold at up to recent values, but secondary quality was. easier by 10/- a head. Extra prime heavy steers made to £l2/2/6, prime heavy £9 to £ll, prime medium-weight £l/10/- to £9/5/-. Extra prime heifers to £B/7/6, jrime £6 to £7/10/-, ordinary £4 to £5/10/-. Prime cows to £6/12/6, ordinary £4 to £5/5/-, light and aged to £3/15/-. Fat pigs: A moderate entry of pork and a smaller one of bacon. It was a good sale, exporters taking a fair proportion of qualities suitable for the freezing trade. Choppers made to £2/13/6, baconers 45/6 to £3/3/6, average price per lb. 4Jd. to sd. Porkers made 29/6 to 39/6, extra to 47/6, average price 5Jd. to 6d. Burnside Sale Dunedin, January 22. There was an exceptionally large entry in the beef section at the Burnside sale to-day totalling 469 head, while the quality generally was superior to that offered for some considerable time. The sale opened with prices practically equivalent to those realised at the previous sale, but quickly declined and generally values were 30/- per head easier for all classes. A large entry of store cattle was offered, numbering 297. A pen of well-bred four-year-old steers realised £7/8/-, and lighter sorts to £5 10/-. Grazier and good-conditioned cows did not meet with a very keen demand, and vealers sold at slightly reduced rates. The small entry of dairy cows did not receive much attention from buyers, only good close to profit sorts being in demand. In the mutton section an entry of 1586 was forward. The yarding of wethers comprised principally medium quality sorts, with several pens of finer wools and only an odd consignment of heavy sheep. Values were on a par with last week’s average rates, freezing buyers and graziers operating' for all lighter descriptions. The fat lambs forward numbered 1004. Export buyers operated at the increased schedule and butchers competed for all heavier grades, values appreciating 1/- per head. In the fat pig section 162 were yarded. The market had a downward trend, both baconers and porkers selling about 5/- a head cheaper. For the 76 store pigs offered buyers were plentiful and a keen eale resulted. Stortford Lodge Valdes By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, January 22. The Stortford Lodge sale was held today as usual, owing to its being found unpractical to postpone in keeping with the observance of the day of national mourning. At the commencement of the sale it was explained that, the associated auc-. lioneers had held a lengthy conference last night, when it was found that a large number of stock were in transport and in paddocks in readiness for the sale. In view of this position it was found that the sale would have to be proceeded with. Fat cattle were again in short supply, and sold well after well-spread competition. For the increased yarding of store rattle, values, which have shown a hardening tendency at recent sales, were fully maintained. Competition was keen, and grown cattle made the best sales known for some time. Fat' sheep in increased supply saw an easing tone, with values back to parity levels. Store sheep were steady. . _ Fat cattle: Bullocks, to £l2; heifers, to £7/16/7; cows, to £B. Store cattle: Bullocks, to £B/12/6; steers, to £5/15/-.
