Contract For Steel Let FAIR AT HAUMOANA Dominion Special Service. Napier, January 21. The police are investigating the circumstances of a mysterious fire which last, week at Fernhill, when, during the absence of the occupants, a six-room-ed house was destroyed. The house was owned by Mr. W. Georgetti and was insured in the Commercial Union Insurance office for £6OO. It is understood that there was no insurance on the furniture, and the occupier, Mr. Burns, schoolmaster at Omahu, will therefore be a heavy loser.Napier Landmark. A landmark which will be visible from many miles, especially in the sunlight, has been provided for Napier by the painting with aluminium paint of the highest water tower on the top of Bluff Hill. It is expected that the tower will also act as a daylight beacon for aeroplanes passing over Hawke’s Bay. Women’s Cricket Match. The following have been chosen to practice for the match between the Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay women’s cricket teams, to be played on McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday next: —Mrs. Proctor, Mrs. C. J. O’Brien, Misses G. W. Moyle, E. Lowe, A. Burns, M. Kelly, A. Dwyer, D. Skews, I. Phillips, N. Baxter, L. Molander, L. Weber, N. Webster, C. Fernandos, and E. Knowles. Distinguished Visitor. A distinguished visitor to Napier this week will be Vice-Admiral J. E. T. Harper, C. 8., M.V.0., author of the famous book, “The Truth About Jutland,” who is to give an address in Napier on Wednesday. his subject being, “Naval and Air Defence.” Admiral Harper is recognised as one of Britain’s leading authorities on matters relating to armaments and defence. He is the only New Zealander ever to have attained the rank of British vice-admiral, being the son of the late Mr. Leonard Harper, who lived at Christchurch. He was educated at Christ’s College, and joined the Navy in 1888. Recreation Area.

A suggestion by "the Napier City Council that the freehold of a section of the south pond from the Napier Harbour Board for the purpose of forming a recreation area for Port Ahuriri should be granted was agreed to by the Napier.Harbour Board yesterday, Mr. P. F. Higgins pointed out that the most valuable land ;was retained by the board for building purposes. The recreation ground would occupy only about one-half of the whole area.

New Wharves. The Napier Harbour Board yesterday let a contract for the supply of 1200 tons of steel to R. Holt and Sons, of Napier, the sum involved being approximately £15,000. The steel will be used in the construction of the first of the deep-sea wharves, which are to be constructed in connection with the harbour development works. The preliminary dredging of the area for tho first wharf is nearly finished, and the driving of the piles will be started as soon as the piles have been manufactured and seasoned. Hauinoana Fair. i The Haumoana Beach Improvement So-

ciety has organised an “all nations fair,” embracing many novelty items of entertainment, including a fancy dress dog parade, a baby show, men’s bed-making and hat-trimming competitions, nail driving for the women, and a grand mixed wheelbarrow derby. The children will be well entered for with a fancy dress parade, and parades of decorated trikes, bikes, and doll’s prams. Side-shows, featuring fish ponds, coconut shies, lucky dips, dart games, etc., will add to the fun of the fair, and afternoon tea will be available. Special excursion rates will be charged from Hastings, buses leaving from opposite the Hastings Post Office at 10 a.m. and hourly from noon onward. A grand fancy dress ball will be held in the beaeh hall at night, and this should prove a fitting finals to au enjoyable outing.

Personal. Mr. C. W. Ennis, who for the past live years has been district manager of the Napier office of. the A.M.P. Society, has been transferred, to Wellington, where he will take up the position of chief clerk. Mr.'Ennis was met and entertained by the office and field staffs, and presented ■with a silver tea service.
