SICKNESS AMONG MAORIS Dominion Special Service.
Palmerston North, January 21.
The chairman of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, Mr. J. K. Hornblow, and the managing-secretary, Mr. A- J. Phillips, are going to Wellington on Thursday to interview the Director-General of Health, Dr. M. H. Watt, concerning sickness among the Maoris in the board’s district, and also the building scheme at the hospital. Plant Research Station.
Local bodies in Palmerston North interested in the work of the Plant Research Station received with considerable satisfaction the news that Dr. G. H. Cunningham, mycologist, who recently resigned, had been prevailed upon to reconsider his decision. Several organisations made representations to the Government following disclosures relating io the conditions under which the experts at the Plant Research Station were forced to work, and these bodies are delighted that, improved facilities having been promised, Dr. Cunningham js prepared to carry on his work in Palmerston North, Health Stamp Campaign.
The sum of £2l/0/3 was collected in the Palmerston North district for the final period by the sale of health stamps and covers and by donations. The first batch of 12 children at the health camp at Otaki is reported to be thriving and to have been greatly improved by their holiday. The second contingent of 12 children is expected to go to Otaki about February 8, as the six weeks allotted to the first batch will then be up.
Revising Dairy Schedules. The Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association is at present revising the schedules in the dairy classes for its winter show which is being held from June 16 to June 20. These will be issued shortly to dairy factory managers. River Protection Work.
Ten chains of vfillow-planting done at Hamilton’s bend by the Manawatu-Oroua River Board recently for protection work has produced a most favourable result so far. The trees have made an excellent strike and the whole plantation has been fenced.
Personal. Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Wimsctt and Miss Wimsett, who have been on a motor tour in the South Island have_ returned to their home in Palmerston North. Professor G. S. Peren, principal of Mas, sey Agricultural College, who, with Mrs. Peren and their family, have been spending the holidays at Muritai, has returned to Palmerston North.
