Palmerston North. January 18.

While being conveyed by motor-car Io the Porirua Mental Hospital at .1.15 o'clock this afternoon, Lawrence Frederick JlcNie, aged 25. of Raetibi, who was under escort, met his death near Tiakitahuna. He jumped from the ear immediately in front of another one being driven by Mr. David Mitchell, F.R.C.S., of Palmerston Norlb. who was proceeding in the opposite direction.

Mr. Mitchell swerved, but could not avoid striking McVie. who received head injuries, from which he died immediately.
