Popularising Palmerston

ITEMS FROM MANAWATU Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, January 19. Formed last year with the object of advancing the interests of Palmerston North ami district, the Palmerston North 59,000 Club has already achieved a remarkable degree of.success. Its numerous sub-committees have investigated matters covering a wide range, and it has combined with other bodies in an effort to widen the city’* sphere of influence and to give publicity to the potentialities of the district. In pursuance of this policy Ute club t« at present negotiating with tlie Railway Department for the issue throughout the Dominion of 10,000 folders and 2000 posters setting out the attractions of Palmerston North. The proposed campaign would cover a period of 12 months and, it is considered, would be of inestimable value to tlie district. Heavy Rain.

Commencing at 3 o’clock on Saturday morning rain fell heavily, several showers being of torrential intensity. The fall gradually slackened and stopped about 7.30 a.m. Tlie gauge at the Tiritca waterworks recorded a fall of 1.22iu. during the night and a fresh soon developed in the stream.

Art Gallery and Museum. The effort to raise funds for an art gallery and museum in Palmerston North is meeting with gratifying success. Already £5O worth of tickets have been sold on the dolls’ house which is being raffled, and it is hoped before the end of the month to double that amount. The city council has already voted £250 and the Manawatu Art Society £25 toward the fund. N.S.W. Bowlers.

The New South Wales bowlers arrived in Palmerston North to-day in the course of their tour of the Dominion. Tlie party includes Mr. A. E. Packer (manager) and Mr. T. IV. Heath, president of the New South Wales Bowling Association. _ Tomorrow morning at tlie Palmerston North green they will play five rinks representing the Manawatu centre and after luncheon will leave for 'Wanganui.

Chess Champion’s Visit. Ou Wednesday next Mr. C. J. .8. Purdy, Australia and New South Wales chess champion, who also won first prize at the Dominion tournament held in Wellington recently, is to visit Palmerston North. He will play exhibition games. Mr. Purdy, who is a B.A. of Sydney University, and editor of the “Australian Ghess Review,” won the Australian and New South Wales titles in 1934 without the loss of a game, and last year successfully defended them. He first won the New Zealand championship and the Nelson congress in 1924-25, when still a schoolboy of 17. CARS IN COLLISION Accident in Foxton Dominion Special Service. Foxton, January 19. Tlie Avenue Road-Johnston Street intersection on the main highway through the borough of Foxton was the scene of a motor accident shortly before midday on .Saturday, when a large new sedan came into collision with a , lighter touring vehicle, which finally came to rest in the drain at the bottom of 15ft. bank. The sedan ear, which was proceeding northward along Johnston Street, was driven by Mr. J. I. Hooker, taxi driver, of Stratford. The touring ear, which was proceeding from Foxton down Avenue Road toward Marotiri. was driven by Miss L. R. Tucker, of Marotiri. Mr. J. B. Coley, an eye-witness of the accident, extricated Miss Tucker from the wreckage. An examination by Dr. E. M. Wyllie showed that Miss Tucker had miraculously escaped serious injury, but she suffered considerably from shock and abrasions. The passengers in the taxi, Mrs. Hooker and two children, escaped injury. The touring car was badly damaged, the hood and windscreen being levelled and a hole was torn in the gearbox. The sedan was damaged and the front offside mudguard and front axle and one window wet’e shattered. ! Mr. Hooker's mother, who arrived on the scene shortly after, suffered a heart attack and she was removed to Mr. D. Christie’s residence for treatment. DANNEVIRKE ITEMS Membership of R.S.A. Dannevirke, January 18. At a meeting of the local branch of the N.Z.R.S.A. the Norsewood sub-branch signified its intention of severing its connection with the Takapau R.S.A. and linking up with Dannevirke as from April .1, 1936. At that date a sub-branch of this association will be launched at Pongaroa. When these two sub-branches begin to function as a part of this association it is anticipated that the present membership will almost be doubled. The financial membership of the_local association on December 31, 1935, was 160, and there are still over SO non-mCmbers who have not yet joined up. Visit of Minister. , Hon. P. Fraser visited Dannevirke yesterday afternoon in conclusion of his tour of Hawke’s Bay. The visit was the first paid by a Minister of the new Government to this district. Fire at Matamaii. Tlie residence of Mr. S. Ashum. situated on the Mataimiu-Ormondville main highway, was destroyed yesterday a Iternoon by fire. The family were away at Palmerston North. Nothing was saved. Borough Notes. At this week’s meeting of (he Dannevirke Borough Council it was resolved that the council make a donation of £5 toward the funds of the Ruabine I'ipe Band. Advice was received by the council from the Department of Internal Affairs that the Dominion town planner, Mr. R. B. Hammond, who had had several conferences with Mr. It. D. Hill, proposed to visit Dannevirke to inspect (he district. Coronation Baths. The receipts for December for the Coronation Baths were £-13/8/10. as compared with £2O/19/1 for the corresponding month last year. The takings to date for the season were £56/15/9. compared with £63/19/6 up to the end of. December last year. Sanitary Conference.

Mr. C. 11. Scott, borough inspector, was granted permission by the borough council last night to attend the annual conference of the Royal Sanitary Instiute, to be held at Christchurch nt the end of the month. Tennis Club Dance.

The dance held by the Dannevirke Town Tennis mid Croquet Club in Loader’s Hall proved a very happy function and was thoroughly enjoyed. Many visiting tennis players were among those who attendwl. The music was supplied by Mr. Les Anderson’e orchestra, and Mr. I. Connell gave an appreciated extra.
