THAMES FINAL

Double to Laudatory VALRENT’S HACK CUP President’s to Day Wind Dominion Special Service. Thames, January .18. The Thames Jockey Club's annual meeting concluded to-day in overcast but tine weather, except for a heavy shower about 19 a.m., which did not affect the track, which was in good condition. The inquiry into the running of Tassau in the Puriri Handicap on Thursday was concluded. The committee stated that. it viewed the running of Taeeait with grave suspicion, but the evidence was insufficient to justify further action. The jockey Winder was severely cautioned and instructed to infuse more vigour into his riding in future. 1 There was a large attendance and _the totalisator investments were £11,794. compared with £9295/10/- on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £21,010/10/-, against £17,928 last year. Surprise to Start. The moderately-fancied Hope Lass brought off a surprise in the Kopu Handicap, paying double figures for a win. Diacquedoon au<l Hope l.asrf made all the running, the latter running on well at the finish to win decisively. Grand Tonic was a moderate third and Dust Up ran on for fourth. Hope Lass is a shapely mare by Te Monanui, but she lacks size. The field was weak and the form of the others was not impressive. Racewhip was badly left. Jumping Improves. Jumping with more confidence than on the first day, British Columbia scorer! in good style in the Hikutaia Hurdles after being well back early. Dark Princess made most of the running, but she was headed three furlongs from home by Mossvale, British Columbia and Semiarch. British Columbia ran on strongly at the finish and won well from Mossvale, with Semiarch a creditable third ami Dark Princess fourth. Solomon fell at the second fence and Last Lap pulled up very lame. Laudatory’s Double. The first day winner, Laudatory, was again successful in the Turua Handicap. She secured a fine run through on the rails at the home turn and went on strongly to beat Gay Egypt by three parts of a length. Gay Egypt was in front at the straight entrance, but hung out badly and appeared unlucky to ’•» beaten. Winlona ran u good rate for third, a length and a half away, with Leo Colossus a fair fourth. Te Ilai and Mafeking, who did not appear to be suited by the going, and Raupai, were in that order next. Vali'cnt’s Good Effort. Valrent registered his best performance to win the Thames Hack Cup. He was always near the front, but covered a good deal of extra ground, being outside ,of Enlightenment and Loombination practically the whole way. Enlightenment was in charge a furlong from home and appeared likely to succeed, but Valrent finished strongly on the outside to win by a neck. Loombination registered a good effort for third a head away, with Iluskie running on in fourth place. Seaman and Lady Zinnia, who was never dangerous, and Racette were next. Improving Day Wind. It was with a good finishing effort that Day Wind got up to win the President's Handicap. He was always prominent, and after following Prince Acre, Bonny Gay, Grand Talk and Miss Lu into the straight, came on to win by half a length from Lagoon. Lagoon was in the rear for the greater part of the journey and finished very solidly. Prince Acre appeared a winner at the home turn, but weakened into third place half a length away, with Grand Talk, Miss Lu, Sir Abb, Master Norval and Bonny Gay in that order next. Day Wind is on the improve and should go on to further successes, while Lagoon was responsible for a solid performance. Favourite Beaten. The each-way favourite Solaria showed speed in the Parawtii Handicap, but weakened in the straight to finish third. Lucidus was always within striking distance of the leaders and smothered the opposition to win by two lengths from Tin Lap, who came home well to beat Solaria by half a length. Wahine Reihi was right up fourth, with King Ford, Puriri Park and Coronis in a bunch " next. Coronis was caught in the tapes and carried the cord in her bridle throughout the race. After waiting in behind the leaders till the straight was reached. Abbey Feale finished on solidly to win the Farewell Handicap by the narrow margin of half a head from Professional. The latter did not have the best of the running and was unlucky. Mnngaei'e was a creditable third, with Sir Tommy fourth. Sir Tommy did not begin smartly, but quickly ran to the front only to fade at the end. Winlona was fifth, the nearest she got, with Triune and Sing Lee next. Finished Well. The well-supported Ringshot ■ finished well to win the County Hack Handicap from Gay Egypt. It looked ns if Gay Egypt would win when he ran up to Wahine Roa and Libra at'the home turn. However. Riugsliot finished a shade too well. Gay Egypt was unlucky as he was squeezed at the start. Dutch Girl was fourth, in front of Barograph. Results in Detail By Telegraph —Press Assocint’oil.
