Farewell to Popular Secretary

A farewell tendered by members of the Maranui Surf Life-saving Club, in the club rooms. Lyall Bay, on Saturday night to the club’s honorary secretary, Mr. Frank Chapman, was attended by a large number of club members and representatives from the sister life-saving club, Lyall Bay. Mr. P. Edwards presided. The loyal toast was followed by that to the successful harbour swimmer, C. E. Claridge, which was enthusiastically honoured. During the evening some entertaining reminiscences were given by members. Mr. Chapman was greeted with enthusiasm when the chairman presented him with a solid leather inscribed suitease, tlie gift of members of Ihe club as a token of their appreciation of Mr. Chapman's services. Mr. Chapman has been transferred to Sydney by his employers. Mr. Cliapman sincerely thanked all for the gift, which, he said, he would treasure. In the course of his speech Mr. Cliapman related some reminiscences, lie joined Hie Maranui club nt the age of 15, and the following year ho was appointed honorary secretary 'to the life-saving association, an honour which he has held to the present time. On behalf of the captain of the Lyall Bay team. Mr. S. Muller, who was unavoidably absent. Mr. Peter Coira paid a tribute to the guest. In endorsing the remarks of several speakers respecting the qualities o. Mr. Chapman as hon. secretary to the N.Z. Surf Life-saving Association, Mr. Coira traced the history of life saving in Wellington since becoming associated with Mr. Chapman on the N.Z. council several years ago „ , ~ Songs were sung by Messrs. N. txould, and humorous sketches were given by G. Sealy. Wilson. S. Guppy. C. Claridge, E. Edwards, B. Mclvor, and T. Martin. The accompaniments were played by Air. Carl Eversleigli, a member of the club. In an exhibition of wrestling T. Marlin beat S- Guppy in a thrilling display, both contestants giving n magnificent display for amateurs. Mr. C. E. Claridge was referee.
