BEEF MARKET QUIET

Lamb market: Steady with prices unchanged. Demand is improving, aud market short of supplies until steamers due next week arrive Mutton market: Wether and ewes; market steady for lightweights witii tendency easier for heavyweights.

Beef market: Frozen beef market quiet and unchanged. New Zealand porker pigs: Slightly easier. Prices to-day are from l-Bd. to id. lower than quotations with trade slow. New Zealand baconer pigs: Price has advanced slightly owing to temporary short spot stocks. Tlie above report was received on Saturday by the Meat Board from its London oflice, which advises that tlie following are the approximate average prices realised for Hie week, based on actual transactions of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of meat mentioned and are for representative parcels of the goods offering during tlie week, being for business done on tlie basis of delivered to Smithfield market, and/or ex London stores. The Bank of New Zealand, produce department, has received the following advice from its London office as at close of business this week :—The market is weaker for heavyweight wethers, lightweights remain steady. The market for ewes is rather.easier; supplies are more than sufficient to meet the demand. Lambs are in short supply until the next arrivals; the demand is moderate. There is a fair demand for beef. Trade generally is slow. Wethers,.light, sd. to 6d. per lb.; heavy, 3 3-Bd. to 4 5-Bd.; ewes, 2jd. to 3 5-Bd.; lambs, 2’s, 7Jd. to Bd.; B’s, 7J3. to Bd.; seconds, 7Jd. to 7|d.; ox hinds, 33d. to 3i}d.; "fores, 2 l-Bd. to 2 3-Bd.

. Compared with last week's quotations, wethers, 48 to 561 b., l-Bd. per lb. lower; 56 to 721 b. id. per lb. lower; ewes, 64 to 721 b., l-Bd. per lb. lower; lambs and others unchanged. The market for lamb is steady to firm. For mutton the market on the spot is jveaker. The above cabled advice has been received by Levin and Co. Ltd. from their London agents, under date January 17, who quote current ‘'delivered” prices as follotv :—North Island down lambs, 281 b. to 361 b., Bd. per lb.; 361 b. to 421 b., Bd. per lb.
