BOWLS FINALS

Thrilling Game in Singles DOMINION TOURNEY Canterbury Club’s Dual Success By Telegraph-Press Association. Cliristcliureli, January 18. The Canterbury Bowling Club, winner of the rinks championship, achieved the unprecedented success of taking two Dominion titles at the tournament when it won the pairs championship from Grey Lynn by 21 to 10 this afternoon. J. Turpin and R. Haworth (skip) were members of the team which won the rinks title yesterday. The weather and green conditions were almost perfect. ' The singles final between Livingstone and Hardley was a most thrilling game, marked by the most perfect drawing seen in the tournament. Livingstone started brilliantly, drawing shot after shot, but Hardley effected several good saves by raking bowls. With four heads gone Livingstone led 4-1, but a well-drawn brace by Hardley on the sixth left him only one down. He equalised the score on the next head. Another single put him on top, but on the ninth Livingstone drew four perfect shots which Hardley failed to shift. With half the board covered Livingstone had added another by just resting Hardley's shot out wfth his last bowl. Then a well-placed brace to Hardley brought him to within a point of his opponent. Both men were right at the top of their form now, and round after round of applause greeted their efforts. The thirteenth and fourteenth heads went to Livingstone with singles, leaving him with a margin of four. Then Hardley took a brace, Livingstone retaliating on the sixteenth with a perfectly drawn single, his last bowl just cutting Hardley out of the shot; A single to Hardley followed iu the next head, and then Livingstone followed suit on the eighteenth, leaving him three up and three to go. He added anothei- single on the twentieth, leaving his opponent wanting three to tie on the last head. Though lying one on this head Hard* ley burnt the head. It was of no avail, however, as Livingstone lay within a few inches of the kitty with his third bowl, and Hardley failed in both his efforts to draw. Pairs Contest. Interest was keyed up when the finalists, J. Turpin and R. Haworth (Canterbury) met J. Higginson and. H. Whittle (Grey Lynn). Higginson drew a nice shot on the first head, which remained to the finish. On the next head he again lay the shot, each of Turpin’s bowls going wide. Higginson drew a perfect shot with his first bowl and Haworth missed in both his attempts to drive It off. On the fourth Higginson got a two, outplaying Turpin, who had failed to find his green. Turpin got two on the next head and was lying two on the sixth, when Whittle removed one and drew the shot ball out. Grey Lynn 6, Canterbury 2. Turpin drew to within a foot of the kitty with his first at the seventh and Whittle failed to drive it off. Higginson then drew two and when Haworth drew’ the shot Whittle broke the head and laid two up. After a single on the ninth head Turpin placed each of his bowls near the kitty. Higginson was over and missed with his last bowl, leaving the score Grey Lynn 8, Canterbury 7. On the 11th Higginson lay within an inch of kitty and Turpin almost got it out. Grey Lynn took a single on the long 12th head, Canterbury following suit on the next. The Canterbury men took the lead for the ■ first time on the fourteenth. Turpin drew just behind the kitty, but with his last Higginson drew a toucher. This was wrested out by Turpin, only to be replaced by Higginson by a nice drive. Haworth put Canterbury 3 up, with the score 11-10 in their favour. Turpin got a toucher on the fifteenth, and on the next Whittle pushed a short ball of his opponent’s in and Haworth drew another. Canterbury got four, the score being Canterbury 16, Grey Lynn 10. With live heads to go and a lead of six, Canterbury put on another two on the seventeenth head. Whittle failing with a draw and a drive. Haworth beat Higginson to lay right on the kitty and Whittle failed to remove it. Higginson drew a nice shot, only to be baffled by Haworth. With his last bowl Whittle drove, but only succeeded in removing one of his own. This left the visitors in a hopeless position, and the game ended Canterbury 21, Grey Lynn 10. Results are as follow: — SINGLES. Final: F. Livingstone (Onehunga) 16, C. E. Hardley (West End, Auckland), 12. PAIRS. Semi-final: J. Turpin and R. Haworth (Canterbury) 19, J. B. Davis and A. S.
