MAYFAIR WINS

Wellington Idle Along Trials THREE RACES, TWO FIRSTS Idle Along One Point Behind Hard north-westerly winds and heavy seas made for difficult .sailing conditions in a series of three trials held during the week-end to determine Wellington's representative in the New Zealand Idle Along championship. With 33 points in the three races, Mayfair, of the Evans Bay club, owned and sailed by E. Beck, proved the winner, but although he won the first two races Beck was hard put to it to stall off A. Harvey's new boat. Idle Along, which performed consistently for a second, a fourth and a first, 32 points in all. Three boats were entered from each ot the Evans Bay, Heretaunga, Worser Bay and Port Nicholson clubs, and Saturday’s squally weather proved the undoing of several. Dora capsized and Gladys went to her assistance, Mabelle found full'sail more than she could hold, and Kathleen finished minus her bowsprit and with chainplates nearly torn out. Rebel was unfortunate in becoming mixed up with a 14-footer which capsized in Oriental Bay before the start of the race.

Trials

Behind

The wind was much steadier yesterday, but the skippers of several boats considered their chances hopeless and did not start in the third trial. Total Points, Points gained by the 12 boats are as follow, E.B. indicating Evans Bay. 11. Heretaunga, W.B. Worser Bay, and P.N. Port Nicholson: — Mayfair (E. 8. 33 Idle Along (H.) 32 Unique (H.) ._. 30 Nahlin (W.8.) 27 Dora (P.N.) 20 Dorothy (EJl.j 1? Rebel (PN.) .1.5 Rongomai (.II.) 14 Kathleen (W.8.) 12 Vampire (E. 8. II Gladys (P.N.) 5 Mabelle (WJJ.) 1 Saturday’s Race.

Saturday's trial soon resolved itself into a struggle between the Evans Bay boat Mayfair and the new Idle Along. Starting from Point Jerningham on the long run to Shag Point, at the head of Evans Bay, neither of these two were very well away, Mabelle and Dorothy getting the best of tlie start. Vampire was away well, but struck trouble with her spinnaker immediately, Nahlin also losing control further down the bay. Keeping close to the shore, Harvey took Idle Along through to the front, closely pursued by Mabelle, which took the lead opposite Kio Bay. The wind was coming in tremendous squalls, and, with a big sea running, the boats gave their crews ami spectators plenty of thrills.

Round Shag Point mark the first time Idle Along was again ahead, followed by Mabelle and Nahlin. But once on the wind on the way buck to Point Jerningham positions changed rapidly. Mayfair worked the eastern side of the bay at first, and when she crossed over to split tacks by Kio Bay it was seen that she had weathered everything, just passing ahead of Idle Along, behind which was Dorn. At Point Jerningham these three were still close, with the rest of the field well strung out. Harvey hauled very close in an endeavour to weather the point, and slid away to leeward, losing a lot of ground. Mayfair was first round, followed 32 seconds later by Idle Along, then Dora, Vampire, Nahlin and Gladys. Mabelle, carrying full sail and a leading jib, had practically filled up on the beat to windward, and she was taken ashore at the Parent Slip. Mayfair had taken a lot of water over on the slog up mid Beck was unable to square away for the run back to Shag Point without first baling out. This allowed Harvey to regain the lead and at Shag Point he was 15 seconds ahead. Dora had a spectacular capsize soon after squaring away, and nothing else was within minutes.

Mayfair and Idle Along settled down to a stern duel all the way back to the finishing line, at Point Jerningham. Splitting tacks frequently, first one and then the other took the lead, but from Kio Bay onward Mayfair gradually drew away, winning by pearly a minute. The race resulted as follows:—

Yestei'daj’s Trial. Thi" wind was very .inui-li steadier, although still a two-reefer, when the second trial commenced yesterday morning. The course was triangular, giving a lead from Point Jerningham to Fraser Rock, a run to the Miramar buoy, and a bent back to Point Jerningham, twice round. Unique and Rongomai had the best of a splendid start. 'Mayfair was first round

Fraser Rock mark, followed by Nahlin, and thereafter interest diminished —it was merely a matter of by how much Mayfair would win. Gladys captiaed spectacularly “all standing” on. tho run down, but she was righted very smartly, although she tool: no further part iu the race. .At tho completion of the first round Mayfair was over two minutes ahead of Dora, which had made good ground on the wind, with Nahlin, Idle Along, Vampire and Unique in a buueh. Round the second lap Mayfair continued to stretch her lead, while Dorn, Unique, Idle Along and Nahlin had an interesting light for the next platings. Nahlin tried to work the eastern shore of the bay, but lost a lot of ground, while among the other three, working the opposite shore, (he lead changed frequently. They bended for the finishing line almost in line, Dora, in the windward berth, getting a break which brought her home five seconds ahead of Unique, with Idle Along another one second back. Next came Nahlin, with Dorothy and Kathleen dead-heating. Details are as follow:—

'fho Afternoon Race. _ The start of the third trial, timed for 3 p’clock, was delayed until 4.30 in the hope of the weather abating, but tho wind did not drop very much. 'The course was laid from Clyde Quay Wharf, to Point Jerningham, to Coromandel, back to Point Jerningham, finishing off Clyde Quay Wharf. Harvey’s new Idle Along at last came into her own, taking the lead from the .start and remaining in front all the way. Mayfair was never prominent, and finished fourth, giving her just enough points to stave off defeat. Details of the race are as follow; —
