LEVEL CROSSINGS
Scheme For Elimination Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 14. A letter was received at the monthly meeting of the Alasterton County Council to-day from the general manager, New Zealand Railways, Mr. G. I-L Alaekley, advising that the recentlyannounced programme for the elimination of level crossings was arranged between the Alain Highways Board, the Unemployment Board and the Railways Board, and covered crossings on main highways only. As Stewart’s level crossing at Kopuaranga was not on the main highway it was not taken info consideration in connection with the preparation of that programme. The letter stated that as regards the elimination of crossings on roads other than main highways it was necessary for local bodies concerned to bear the same proportion of the cost, that is. one half, as was being borne by the Alain Highways Board in cases of crossings on main highways. If the council was desirous of going on with the elimination of Stewart's crossing the department would be pleased to consider proposals. Cr. J. AV. Colquhoun : AVell it does not look as though we can do much in tiie matter. The chairman, Mr. AV. I. Armstrong: No. On his motion it was resolved to thank Mr. Alackley for his letter and to defer consideration in the meantime.
Cr. Colquhoun: AVhat about that, cattle-stop at Kopuaranga station'.’ Perhaps we had better jog their memory. because we want to got on with the road.
It was resolved to call the department’s attention to this question.
