Tlie explanation that tlie trouble had been caused by his trying to live up to the standards of young men ami women friends who were earning more than him was made to tlie police by Roland George Hart, farm hand, aged 20, who was charged in tlie Wellington Magistrate's Court yesterday witli fraudulently omitting to account for and pay £lO to Donald William Matheson. Pleading guilty, lie was admitted to probation for 12 months by Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, SAL. ami be was also ordered to make restitution.
Detective-Sergeant 1.. Revell said that for about. 12 months Hart had been employed as a milk roundsman by Mr. .Matheson. Until two or three mouths ago his work had been satisfactory. but. it was then noticed that there were a number of outstanding accounts on his round. Inquiries revealed that people whom he thought had not paid had actually paid. When interviewed by Detective T. Brosnan, licensed admitted the offence. There were 36 small amounts ranging from ]/- to 16/-, which accused had converted to his own use. It was Hart’s first appearance before court. ‘ J am sorry to see you in this (rouble, and 1 am sure you will profit by what has happened.” said the magistrate to Hart. “It isn’t worth it, you know. It always ends the wrong way."
