BOWLS TOURNEY

Final Rounds in Rinks Sectional Play

POST-SECTION TO-DAY

Only Two Unbeaten Teams; Six With One Loss

By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, January 11

Overnight rain slowed up the greens to some extent when play was continued to-day in the rinks championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament.

Again this morning conditions were overcast and unpleasant, with misty rain falling at intervals. The tournament has been unfortunate in its weather, for, with only one or two exceptions, the days have been overcast and chilly. Post-section play starts to-morrow, the rinks qualifying being those with six or more wins, those which win sections, and those which tie for section wins; Post-section play will comprise three games of 21 heads each day. A surprise during the morning was the defeat of Dickinson (Avon, Stratford). Hitherto unbeaten in the rinks he went down by a big margin to Sargent (Christchurch), who has only had three wins so far. In spite of his defeat, Dickinson has the necessary six wins to qualify him for the postsectional play. Tvrrell (Roslyn) gained his necessary sixth win this morning after going down in the sixth round to Haworth (Canterbury) yesterday by the good margin of 28-19. Kinks to Take Precedence. For all post-sectional play games in the rinks championship will take precedence and games in the singles and pairs competition will be played as tho men are available. There were few names missing from the list of those who qualified in the rinks who had been expected to go on to post-sectional play, and in this respect’ the rinks sectional rounds did not provide many surprises althougn defeats in the individual rounds had often been most unexpected. Of the 37 teams left in only two wore unbeaten in all eight games, the Dunedin rink skipped by W, Anderson, who had been playing. exceptionally weli, and the Onehunga rink with F. Livingstone as skip, who had not looked like losing a game in the eight played. Six rinks had one loss and the remaining 28 qualified by having six wins. Actually the number of wins in sectional play will make no difference to post-sectional play because every rink eligible begins with two lives. The games will be played on the automatic two-life system.
