"Something should be done about Alsatians,” commented Cr. H. Tallott at a meeting of the Rangiora County Council when dog registeration fees for the year were under discussion. ‘'Ownersshould be forced to keep them on a leash. We jnust make it as hard as we can for them.” The clerk. Mr. S. G. Dailey, said there was no provision for charging a prohibitive fee for any particular breed. The police could order a fierce dog to be muzzled, but the council had not power to force people to keep dogs tied up or muzzled. The difficulty was that owners described Alsatians as sheep or cattle dogs, for which a fee of only 2/6 was charged. It was decided that the fee should be 2/6 for sheep and cattle dogs and 10/- for all others, including Alsatians.
