MOTORING SPEEDS
Upper Hutt Court Cases Evidence that a motor-ear had overtaken another in the vicinity of Silverstream, and that they bad raced abreast at 50 miles an hour for some distance, passing, an intersection, was given by inspector J. E. Ainsworth, of the Main Highways Board, when charging Stanley George Wyatt and Rang! Archibald Temple in the Upper Hutt Magistrate’s Court yesterday with driving at a speed and manner that might have been dangerous to the public. When accosted by the inspector, Wyatt said he was racing against time, while Temple apologised for the trouble caused.
The magistrate, Mr. H. P. Lawry, fined Wyatt £6, remarking that he was the major offender in the circumstances, being the driver who was overtaken. Temple was fined £5. Two young men, Lionel Hayden and Maurice Moeller, arraigned on a similar charge, denied that they had done 50 to 55 miles an hour, which was the inspector's estimate. One of them said they had travelled at a comfortable speed through the Valley, and had got a “nice drop of air at the same time.” The magistrate said there was not enough evidence to warrant a conviction, and accordingly dismissed the ease.
