SALVATION ARMY
Thirty-two Officers
Commissioned
The Vivian Street Citadel was crowded for an annual event of considerable interest, to New Zealand Salvationists, the commissioning of the cadets as officers. conducted last night by Lt.-Coin-missioner F. H. Adams.
Thirty-two young men and women who for the past ten months have been receiving their training at the Training Garrison, Aro Street, were promoted to probationary officership, and appointed to various responsibilities iu the field and social work throughout the Dominion. They represent a splendid reinforcement of enthusiastic youth to the Army’s growing forces. Preceding the commissioning, a pageant was presented depicting some of the servants of God through the agei. Patriarch, Law Giver, Prophet, Priest, Apostle, Martyr, Missionary, Preacher, Reformer and modern Salvationist, as u herald announced them, entered slowly and took prearranged places on the platform. Young women dressed to represent the various nationalities among whom the Army is working also took their places, grouped around a central illuminated Cross. As a climax to the pageant, the AVellington City band struck up a stirring march, and the cadets entered with their colours, and marched past the commissioner to their places in the pageant, when the chorus ol: General Evangeline Booth’s song, "The AVorld for God,” was sung. A message from General Evangeline Booth was read by Mrs. Lt.-Commis-siouer Adams, and Brigadier Sidney Smith (training principal) gave a review of the sessional activities, and presented the cadets to the commissioner to receive their commissions. The cadets then made a declaration of faith, and pledged themselves to the service of God in the Salvation Army. Before he proceeded with the commissioning, the Territorial Commander gave a charge to the cadets, in which he urged them to regard it as their duty to bear witness to the Saviour before the whole world, to care for the poor, to love the unlovable and befrieu-l those who have no friends. It was by holy living, boundless love, and adherence to the principles and discipline of the movement, he said, that they would show themselves faithful officers of the Army. After the commissioning the field secretary (Lt.-Colonel F. Burton) welcomed the new officers. During the meeting the cadets sang two company songs, “Hark, Listen to the Trumpeters,” and “The Evangelists’ Song,” and the AVellington City Band (bandmaster, Captain II Goflin) played th© selection "Ewing” (Jakeway).
