14,678 TO JANUARY 11 It. may be fairly safely . assumed that the number of drivers’ licenses issued in a given period is an indication of the increase or decrease in the number of motor-cars and other motor-vehicles on the road. If that be so the figures for Wellington city are rather startling in the increase they have shown during recent mouths. The official year as far as the recording of the number of drivers’ licenses issued in the city of Wellington ends on May 31. For the year ended May 31, 1935, the number of licenses issued was 13,360.
As against that record the number issued between June 1 last year and January 11 this year reached 14,678. Had this 'been the figure for the whole of the current year the increase would have been considered satisfactory, but with over four months and a half stilt to go it would seem that the increase in the number of drivers’ licenses promises to be This means that so far this year the city cou'ncil. through its traffic department, has already collected the sum of £3669/10/ by the issue of drivers’ licenses only If the ratio of increase during the next four months continues the same as the last seven months and a hall the year will be a record for Wellington.
