NEW BUILDINGS
Activity in College Street
College Street, Wellington, is at present in a state of disruption, and is likely to remain so for the next few months. Primarily the cause of the disturbance is the work that is going on in connection with the laying of the new storm-water drain along . that thoroughfare. Another cause is the building activity in the locality. A large three-story factory and shops building in reinforced concrete has recently been completed To the order of Mrs. Deekston. The btiilding, designed on modern lines by Mr. James Bennie, dignifies the corner of College and Tory Streets’, hitherto occupied by tumbledown buildings long since .past their prime. Now another three-story building of reinforced concrete is being erected in the centre of College Street (southern side), which is to occupy an area of ground having frontages of 72ft. Sin. to College Street and Vivian Street by a depth of 108 ft. There will be entrances to the building from both frontages. From the Vivian Street frontage, which is some eight or nine feet higher than the College Street level, there will be a ramp which will make it posible for cars to be driven to the top floor of the building. This building, which is also being constructed for Mrs. Deekston, was designed by Mr. James Bennie, and is being supervised by Mr. W. J. McKeon, while the steelwork involved has been designed by Mr. Phil Allen. The contractor is Mr. J. A. Scarff. The new building is to be occupied by the Amuri Motor and Transport Company. The land is Wellington College reserve.
