Again this year tho South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society intends to introduce an element of friendly rivalry into the destruction of eels in the rivers and streams in its area. In the past, eeling competitions have proved the most effective safeguard against the destruction of small trout, in which the eel is said to be as big an offender as the shag. The society’s curator has made several eel baskets which are being issued to farmers and others interested in the competition, ami especially to those who live near to the rivers. The competitors must take records of the weights of the eels and the dates when they were caught, and at the end of the season the cards will be handed to the curator, together with the has-' kets.

An experience which a number of Auckland householders had some two years ago witli a fainting woman at the front door and nn emergency, call for brandy was recalled recently when a city household was interrupted at the breakfast table by a call for spirits to revive a well-dressed, but ewooning woman who appeared on their doorstep in apparent physical distress. Discussing the subject with friends from the same district, the “Good Samaritans” found that the friends also bad succoured a fainting woman in distress. The discussion occurred on the tram, and the coincidence decided both parties to return to their flats, remove their spare jewellery and cash, and take another look at door and window locks.
