UPKEEP OF ROADS
Waitotara County Council
Dominion Special Service.
Wanganui, .January 13.
At the monthly meeting of the Waitotara County Council to-day, over which Cr. A. Morrison presided, it was decided to support local traffic inspection of the highways as against Dominion control. The-iinance committee was appointed to meet the Minister qf Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, when he visits Wanganui. The Minister, in acknowledging a letter from the council concerning the metalling of the Ahn Ahu Road, said the matter had been closely investigated. It remained for the Government to formulate its Public Works policy, but it was not expected that any new works not provided for on the estimates would be commenced in the near future, so that it appeared likely that the first opportunity to consider the proposal would present itself during file preparation of the next estimates. when the council could schedule the work in order of urgency. Discussing the maintenance of the Wanganui River Road, the chairman said the matter had been debated with the Wangantti County Council’s representatives, but no finality had been reached. The Waitotara county considered £25 a year for three years would be a sufficient contribution toward the upkeep. It was felt that the Wanganui county’s suggestion of £5O for three years was too high. Cr. L. T. Jones said if the question went before the commission it would become a county matter. “The road is not a local one,” he said, “but more of a tourist road.” After a little further discussion it was decided to support the offer made by the chairman.
