INTER-ISLAND AIR MAILS
Christchurch Request
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MOVE By Telegraph—Press Association. Crhistcliurch, January 13. The establishment of an air mail between the North and South Islands is being urged by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, which tills evening sent the following letegraim signed by the president, Mr. F. W. Hobbs, to the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones: "The business community of Christchurch feet very strongly that now the new air service has been started an air mail should be part of it. If your department is not already making arrangements for this to be done, this chamber would welcome an opportunity of meeting you to urge the immediate institution of an air mail service.” With an air mail service as proposed it would be possible to post a letter here at midday to catch the aeroplane leaving at 1.12 p.iu., arriving at Palmerston North at 3.37 pan., connecting with the Main Trunk express, and arriving at Auckland early next morning. A reply posted at Auckland the same evening carried by the railway express would catch the aeroplane at Palmerston North at 5.30 a.m. next day and arrive at Christchurch at 10.55 a.m. This would reduce the time taken by letters in transit to one-half. This expedition, it is argued, would be of special value in dealing with overseas mail via Vancouver. RECEIVING ATTENTION An announcement that no arrangements had yet been made for the prevision of a mail service between the North and South Islands by the Union Airways aeroplanes which commence running from Palmerston North to-, morrow, was made yesterday by the Postmaster-General, Hon. F. Jones. The question, be said, was one that would receive the attention of the Government.
