BOMBS DROPPED ON VOLCANO
Vain Effort to Divert Lava Flow MOLTEN STREAM WITHIN 18 MILES OF TOWN By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright (Received December 29, 5.5 p.m.) Honolulu, December 28. Military aeroplanes yesterday bombed the erupting volcano Mauna In an effort to divert the gigantic lava flow which is threatening the water supply of Hilo and the town itself. Some 7000 pounds of explosives iwe dropped in 10 bombs scoring virtually direct hits. Each blast sent a colunv of black smoke high into the air, the« being visible 20 miles distant. It is the first time such methods have been employed in an effort to control a hiva flow. However, the bombing operations apparently had no effect on the lava flow. A new and more violent disturbance occurred to-day. The river of molten lava is pressing on at the rate of 150 to 200 feet hourly, and is now within three miles of the Hilo water supply and within 18 miles of the town itself. The lava flow is cutting a wide swath through the timber line at a heat of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, destroying trees and .shrubs almost instantly.
