TRICKY FORM

Manawatu Second Day MORE SURPRISES Princess Doreen Wins Chief Event (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Palmerston North, December 27. Backers at Awapuni to-day experienced tricky and improved form, an outstanding instance being in the principal event, the President’s Handicap, won by Princess Doreen. Improvements were also effected by changes of horsemen, two notable instances being Invoice and Silver Jeet. who to-day were ridden by L. J. Ellis. The success of the latter pair, however, was well anticipated. Courtega won the sprint event and Aussie Ra the Himatangi Handicap, stable doubles being secured by these successes and by Invoice and Silver Jest. The day was again fine and oppressively sultry pnd the track was in good order. The attendance was very good for an off day and the totnlisatqr handled £15,930 10/-, compared with £13,903/10/- on the second day last year, an increase of £2026. Boomerang Decisively. Drumpeel, the favourite for the Trial Handicap, made a good effort, but he was never likely to win. Martial Lady and Golden Chest made the pace from Distinguished and Apopo, (hen. Boomerang and Drumpeel. Martial Lady drew clear in the straight, but Boomerang finished solidly and wore her down to win going away, while Martial Lady was threatened for second by a late run by Garter Bed. Drumpeel, Golden Chest,. Distinguished and Apopo were next. ... Boomerang won decisively. There was considerable delay at the start caused by Alloa. All the Way. Tatunau led all the way in the Highweight, and fought off a challenge by Umpire who moved up from the rear passing the half-mile. Royal Pap.a also put m a claim in the straight, but was unable to go on with it. Umpire was third horse out on the turn, and the extra ground probably cost him the race. „ „ , Well Handled. Invoice, favourite for the hack sprint, was nicely handled by L. J. Ellis, and making his run .past the leaders, Bazaine, La Crown, and Lacquer in the straight, he finally stalled off a late run by Erua. Etna was a long way back in the early stages, and he did not make the turn well, but he finished very solidly. He is still "teen, but fully maintaining the promise he showed earlier. Bazaine, Lacquer, La Crown and Hine Ba all finished well up, Hine Ba appearing to get a bad passage. An inquiry was held, and it was found that Lacquer caused interference with Invoice, but no action was taken, it was Hine Ba who got the worst of the deal. Form Improvement. 1 striking improvement iu form was staged bv Princess Doreen to win the President’s ‘Handicap all the way. She set her own pace, and without having anythin.- to take her on, settled down well earlv and then sprinted her opponents home’. Gay Boy, always handy, moved up entering the straight and challenged, and in a desperate see-saw finish, Princess Doreen was ii head in front at the post. Red Sun closed up well from the rear foi third with Tout Io Monde, Bust and Round Score all well up. and Aga Khan beaten off. , The winner had the. race made to order for her ns the time indicates. Gay Loj also improved a lot, and while a section of the public voiced disapproval the cause was fairly obvious. The slow early pace did not suit horses like Red Sun and Round Score but they ran good races. Wins Going Away. Silver Jest made hacks of his opponents in the Champion Hack handicap. He was last to the turn and then swept round the lot to run on and win „om,. nwav. Finnesko, Happy Hunting. and Taillight from Middle. Acceptable .and Contact was the order to the straight but once in line Silver Jest, drew up and nut the issue beyond doubt. Darecourt and Pukeko also finished well to cut out the leaders for the minor places Blue Tiger. Happy Hunting, Finnesko, and Middle were all handy. The winner was the second stable ho to win under L. J. Ellis. He was too good for the opposition and the carrying of ZRb. overweight was more than compensated for by horsemanship. A Close Finish. There was a close finish in the open j-priiit, Courlega coming through on the rails in the straight to snatch victory off Prostration after the latter had come on the outer past the leaders. Cullus made Ibe pace from a well bunched field in the Limuhis. Good Hunting. Slippery Courtega. Bod line. Prostration, and Sevcie. Gasman re fused to go off at the start and whipped in behind several lengths The order was nraeiieally unehanged till nearing the strawlit. when Prostration moved up tact on the outer.. He had tackled the leaders nt the last furlong, where Lnnums had temporarily taken charge, but Courtega. who had waited for a rail opening go through and Just headed him off Good Hunting was close up followed by Limit lus CTillus. Slippery, and Severe. prostration improved, but not quite sufficiently to win. Limulus had eiety chance. Good Hunting ran his best race for some time but Slippery, who was tlw favourite, was never dangerous. Another Close Finish. Although only six started another close finish was staged in the Himatangi Handicap. Hunting Lodge lost her chance when she was squeezed back nt the start. Alcides made the pace from _ After Money. Eminent. Alby. and Aussie Ra. They closed up entering the straight and in a punishing finish Aussie Ra stayed a Irifle belter than Eminent, with Alter Money close up. then Hunting Lodge an' 1 Albv. There was very little between the placed horses, and Hunting Lodge was unlucky. Aussie Ra is showing im-

proved form. He made the fifth winner at the meeting for J. Leach. Surprise in Last. A day of trlcsy form concluded with the unexpected win of Whetuma in the Kelvin Handicap. Sky Pilot was again entrusted with most support, but another slow beginning saw him tail the field ami this time stay there throughout. Lord Mouton and Whetuma led Confiscation, King's Lancer, and Chaste and Whetuma took the lead entering . the straight. He successfully stalled off the challenges of King’s Lancer, Chaste., and ■Confiscation, -winning fairly decisively with little between the other three. The winner’s form has been very moderate and his win really emphasised the weak class. Sky Pilot was disappointing, for despite losing ground at the start he made no impression afterward.
