M.C.C. Cricketers Begin Match at Timaru VISITORS OUT FOR 182 By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, December 27. The M.C.C. cricketers opened a match against South Canterbury at Fraser Park to-day and delighted a large gathering witli a sparkling batting display to score 182 runs in 141 minutes, the total including two Sixes and 18 fours. It was a refreshing afternoon's cricket, the heat being tempered by a cool easterly breeze. The grandstand was well filled, and there were many who - watched the progress of tho-match from the banks. The wicket was slightly tricky and was inclined to favour the bowlers when the visitors, who won the toss, decided to bat. After the first, hour, however, it improved and by tlie time it had been rolled after concluding their innings it was fast and true. Tlie match had rather . a sensational opening when Reynolds, the Temuka fast bowler, who opened the attack from the northern end, completely beat Smiths the Derbyshire professional and brilliant lefthander, with the fourth ball of the day. The crowd received another thrill when Lee replaced Reynolds, and with his first ball dismissed Barber, the Yorkshire captain. 1.11.W. The first three wickets fell cheaply, but Human, Middlesex, and Holmes, the visiting captain, scored speedily, and provided a display of forceful hitting. Holmes was magnificent in his off-driving, and there were many bursts of applause as he frequently found the boundary fences. His toal of 61, which included . eight fours, was compiled in 62 minutes. Langridge, the Sussex professional, was another batsman who pleased. He was aggressive at the start and was the only batsman to score a six, doing so on two occasions. He gave a splendid exhibition and was rather unfortunate in being dismissed by a spectacular catch, which Hahn had to jump for on the longon boundary. After Langridge departed, the scoring slowed up considerably, and with the exception of Griffith, the Cambridge University wicketkeeper, the rmaining batsmen did not enter double figures. The innings closed at 4.50 for 182. Allcott ably handled the South Canterbury attack, which nt no stage could be treated lightly. Kane, who was making his third appearance before M.C.C. teams, bowled 15.3 overs and provided a sensational climax to. the Englishmen’s innings when he captured the last two wickets with successive balls. Allcott was always treated with respect and at times his form was reminiscent of his best performances when he bowled with distinction for New Zealand. The brunt of the attack fell on him. He sent down 19 overs unchanged and took three wickets for 38 runs. At stumps South Canterbury had lost three for 48, Read getting all three wickets. Scores are as follow: — M.C.C.—First Innings.
