Second and Third Rounds YESTERDAY’S PLAY The second ami third rounds of the New Zealand chess championship were played yesterday. Detailed results were: Second Round. Major Championship.—Baeyertz y. Scott, unfinished; Rutherford lost to Abbott; JJyer lost to Gyles; Jones beat Kelling; Purdy beat Armstrong; Beyer v. Severne, unfinished; Burry lost to Erskine. Minor Tourney.—Brown v. Stewart, unfinished; Anderson lost to Langley; Watt beat Fairburn; Hardy and Goldsmith. who had byes, played their ninth round, which was unfinished; 11. Christensen v. R. Christensen, unfinished : Kirkwood drew with Hutchings. Women’s Tourney.—Mrs, Abbott beat Mrs. Short; Mrs. Thorpe lost to Mrs. Goldsmith; Mrs. Abbott mated her opponent on the eighth move. Third Round. Major Championship.—Baeyertz beat Dyer; Rutherford v. Scott, unfinished; Jones v. Gyles, unfinished; Purdy beat Kelling; B_cycr beat Armstrong; Burry v. Severne. unfinished ; Abbott lost to Erskine. Minor Tourney. — Brown lost to Watt; Anderson v. Stewart, unfinished; Hardy v. Fairburn, ttufinisheod; Goldsmith and IT. Christensen, byes; Kirkwood beat R. Christensenj Langley beat Hutchings. There was no play in the third round of the women’s tourney.
