RACES AT ELLERSLIE

Many Lovely Summer Gowns The lovely course at Ellerslie presented a brilliant scene on Boxing Day (states the “Auckland Star”), when the Auckland Racing Club held the first day of the summer meeting. The weather could not have been better for tiie occasion, and from the menibers’ stand, the lawns below were a kaleidoscope of colour. The frocks were charming, and in the more picturesque gowns there were some striking floral patterns and these, accompanied by the large plain hats which are fashion’s decree, gave distinctibn to the scene. The plainer models were also accompanied by large Hat-crowned hate, but here and there a halo shapp added a smart finish. Tlie popularity of navy blue was shown in numerous cases. Indeed, it might almost be said that this season was a navy blue one. Where it was used as the main theme, it was lightened with gleaming white or dove grey and it also made smart trimming on the lighter toned models. Apa_rt from the dressy picture frocks, which were ankle-length, the hemline of the majority of frocks was noticeably shorter than last year. Especially with the trimmer styles was this difference attractive. The fashion in shoes also showed a change, more basket weaves being seen qud more cut-out designs. Bags, shoes and wraps were of toning shades and where coloured shoes were worn they gave a chic touch.
