British Red Cross Society

A meeting of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand branch of tire British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John was held recently at the headquarters office, 61 Dixon Street. Those present were Air. L. 0. H. Tripp, 0.8. E., chairman of the Dominion executive; Lady Myers, N.Z. Council; Mr. 11. Rose,. N.Z. Council; Mr. A. 11. Bath, Wellington; Mrs. 11. H. Smith and Mr. Cyrus Williams, Canterbury; Sir Alexander Roberts, K.8.E., vice-president, representing Otago; and Air. C. G. White, honorary legal adviser. An apology for absence was received from the Dominion president, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, K.C.A’.O., owing to indisposition. Correspondence was received from the joint war -finance committee in England, remitting a. further amount for cx-Imperial soldiers. This had been allocated as follows: Auckland centre, £100; Wellington centre, £.llO 3/1, Canterbury centre £lOO. The secretary of the committee in Englund bad been written to urging that a grant be made for ex-imperial men and their dependents in distress through economic difficulties, and a reply received that owing to the very heavy calls ou available funds, this could not be done, such grants as were made for ex-imperial men to be disbursed on behalf of those suffering war disability as distinct from economic causes.

During the year the sum of £1054 5/8 had been allocated to the joint council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society for the relief of N.Z.E.F. men and their dependents. The arrangement entered into with the council was working most harmoniously and effectively. Reference was made to the resignation of Matron MacMillan, who for many years had been matron of the Montecillo Home. . Dunedin. Most loyal and efficient service bad been given by Matron MacMillan, and the secretary was instructed to convey a special letter of thanks. A return was submitted by the secretary of the Auckland centre showing that the centre, according to its last report and balance-sheet, disbursed the sum of £1515/11/9 on com forts to ex-N.Z.E.F, men in and out of hospital.
