WOOL-SELLING SEASON

Prospects For First Otago Sale INCREASED CATALOGUE Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, December 17. The wool-selling season opens in Otago on Friday when, in view of Hie exceptional quality of the offering, maintenance of recent values in the north is fully anticipated. The allocation for the first auction was originally fixed at 25,000 Allies, but was increased to 30,000 bales when large quantities of the new season’s clips commenced to arrive in the Dunedin stores as the result of fine weather allowing shearing to proceed without interruption. The increased offering indicates that growers are disposed to meet the market at the higher prices that are available. Following on northern sales, the most marked increases over last year’s prices will, it is expected, be for fluor wools, but crossbreds will also be selling at a higher price. The extent of the advance on prices ruling last season and in line with prices obtained at the recent northern sales will probably be from 2d. to 4d. a pound, according to the quality of the wool. The wool from the Otago flocks this season is of exceptional quality, being brighter in colour and lighter in condition than usual. This is the result of the wonderfully mild winter experienced. The wools are in sound condltiou, there being no signs of break in the staple, and the best quality displayed in Dunedin for a number of vears. Of the total offerings at least 50 per cent, will be of finer clips, the balance beiug crossbred wools.

The catalogues contain some early shorn station clips and a fair 'percentage of crossbred wools from coastal areas. A number of clips of carry-over wool from last season is also catalogued. The carry-over was about 20,000 bales, approximating that of previous years. Much of the old wool was cleared when the market rose two years ago and accumulations now practically consist of last year’s wool.
