SCHOOLGIRLS AND MAKE-UP

Headmistress’s Comment By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, December 17. “I can think of nothing more unsuitable than make-up on the face of a girl who has not left school,” said Miss Edwards, headmistress of the Diocesan School, at speech day this afternoon when trenchantly criticising the false maturity of some New Zealand girls. “At the school we simply will not have it,” she said. “There is nothing I hate more than to have a paw spread out in front of me showing ten nails decorated with the grownup addition of varnish and the youthful decoration of grubbiness.” It was really criminal to let the girls wear unsuitable clothing and appalling shoes that were regarded as smart, she continued. Must girls of 17 be treated as if they were 20? _ "We are all nervous about a certain license that has crept into social life in recent years. Are we making the best preparations against temptation in allowing a crop of weeds to choke wholesome interests while girls are so young?”
