Cases at Palmerston North Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, December 17. A man found on licensed premises at the Railway Hotel at 8.40 p.m. on December 10 was fined £2. costs 3/-, by Mr. J. L Stout, in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North this morning. Sydney Wetherall, the barman-porter, who admitted supplying liquor to the mau, was lined £3, costs 3/-. The licensee, James Kerin (Mr. J. Grant), pleaded not guilty to a charge of selling Liquor after hours. It was contended on defendant’s behalf that Kerin had previously instructed the barman to supply only boarders, and that the man found on the premises had misled the porter into believing he was a boarder. Defendant, who had been out, had had no knowledge that the man was in the house. “It is not a serious case,” Mr. Grant said. His Worship: The licensee is responsible for the action of his barman. It is the sort of case where I impose a fine of £1 in order to make the licensee more careful. I shall do so in this ease.” Defendant was also ordered to pay costs 3/-. Red Cross Service. About 90 members of the Palmerston North branch of the Red Cross Nursing Division attended a church parade at All Saints’ Church ‘yesterday morning, the commandant, Mrs. R. L. C. Aitchison, being in 1 charge.’ Before the service the division was inspected by Mrs. A. E. Mansford (in the absence-of the Mayor, president of the Palmerston North branch). The Mayoress was accompanied bv the commandant, by Mrs. A. J. Grahani. president of the Manawatu centre, by Miss M. McLagan, V.A.D. director, and by Miss V. Kelly, superintendent of the seniors. Also present were the assistant-commandant, Mrs. Lyne, and Sister' Dalgleish, superintendent ot flic juniors. The lesson's and . prayers were appropriate for the occasion, and Canon G. Y. Woodward preached the sermon. Railway Route Inspection. Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., left to-day for Napier to join the Minister of 1 üblic ■Works, Hon. 11. Semple, and other members of Parliament who will be making an inspection of the Napier-Gisborne railway route. > Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. Donations'to the Mayor’s Christmas appeal fund now total £45/3/3. This sum is expected to be considerably augmented. Service Officer Appointed. , Mr. G.' P. James, of Auckland, has been appointed service officer of the Automobile Association (Manawatu) in succession to Mr. V. Crichton. There were 45 applicants. Touring Holidays. With (be approach of Christmas the thoughts of many are turning to holiday tours, and already the Manawatu Automobile Association is busy arranging them for those of its members who desire such information and assistance. Quite a number are proposing to visit the South Island this-Christmas, but the North Island scenic resorts are not being overlooked. “A Tecltnical Offence.” “Defendant was certainly too far over on the road, but it was merely a technical offence,” remarked counsel in a case at Palmerston'North this morning, in which a motorist pleaded guilty ,to cutting, a corner as the result of which a collision occurred with a motor-cyclist. “There are too many of these ‘technical offences,’ ” remarked Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M. “I don’t call cutting a corner a technical offence. Defendant will be fined £2, costs 10/-.” Paliiatua Swimming Club. The Pahiat.ua Swimming Club will hold its first carnival for 1936 on January 17. Ekata buna residents belonging to the club will be eligible to compete. Holidays for County Staff. The question of holidays for the outside staff was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Pohangina County Council when it was decided to grant 8J days. Permanent employees are to be paid for one week of the holidays. Heavy Holiday Traffic. A lei ter from the Main Highways Board requesting that provision be made for adequate maintenance of the .highways during the holiday season was read at the monthly meeting of the Pohangina County Council. “It is anticipated,” the letter stated, "that the holiday traffic will be exceptionally heavy this year, and the board requests that maintenance men and machinery should be available during the whole of the -period.” 'The engineer, Mr. D. Watson; reported that he was making arrangements to cope with any emergency.. Girls’ High School’s Progress. “The total enrolment this year lias been 275. the highest number reached last year having been 255,” states the annual report of Mrs. M. Rhodes, principal of the Palmerston North Girls’ High School. “This number was made up of 154 returned to school and 121 new pupils. The highest number on the roll at any one time was 265. Thirty-three pupils left during the year, 18 going to employment, five transferred to other districts, and nine remained at home to assist in domestic duties. During the year the scholastic standard of the school was well maintained. At the end of 1934 53 pupils obtained senior free places by recommendation, five find junior free places extended, 15 pupils passed the university entrance exuinination, and 17 the school certificate examination, and live obtained partial passes; 13 obtained higher leaving •certificates, four passed the examination for junior Government shorthand-typists and one that for senior shorthand-typists. Eight passed the chamber of commerce examinations' for speed shorthand, one the junior typewriting examination, three the junior bookkeeping examination and two tlie senior bookkeeping examination of the same body. Eight obtained I’itman’s speed certificates.”
