Attitude of Lower Hutt Council

The Wellington Hospital Board .also advised the Lower Hutt Borough Council at its meeting last night of its intention to apply to'the Local Government Loans Board for permission to borrow the sum of £155,000. The council's representatives on the board had reported fully on the proposals, it was stated, and suggested that they should be supported by the council. A full report was also received from the fc-perintendent of the hospital. Dr. A. It. Thorne. The Mayor, Mr, J. W. Andrews, in moving that support be accorded, said he was pleased that they had in Dr. Thorne a man who was practical, a planner, and a man who had some vision. Mr. Andrews was satisfied that Dr. Thorne had a thorough grip of the job. He was pleased that somebody with some vision had come forward with a plan. He believed it would meet the needs of the district. The motion was seconded by CT. W. Cole. On the suggestion of Cr. W. B. Rainey it was decided to add that it was hoped tlus decision would not mean a postponement of the request for some additional hospital facilities for the Hutt district. PETONE BOROUGH Council’s Final Meeting of Year The last meeting of the year was held last night by the I’etoue Borough Council, the Mayor, Mr. A, Scholefield, presiding. A letter received from the New Zealand Swimming Association advised that that body approved of the wearing of. bathing shorts for men for non-competition purposes. Expressions of approval were heard from several councillors. Another letter was from the Municipal Association of New Zealand advising that the annual conference was to be held in Napier on March 4, 1936, and asking for notification of delegates proposing to attend. It was decided that the Mayor and the town clerk, Mr. 11. Firth, should attend. Mr. G. A. Booth, sanitary inspector, was to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand branch of the Royal Sanitary Institute at Christchurch. on January 28.
