LOSS TO SCHOOL

Retirement of Headmaster Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, December 13. Special significance was attached to the Wanganui Collegiate .School’s celebration of the end of the year, yince it marked the retirement of Mr. J. Allen, who has been a member of the staff and four years headmaster, completing 29 years’ service. Sincere regret was felt throughout the assembly hall, which was filled to-night when the annual prizegiving took place. “Old boys have told Mr. and Mrs. Allen what their service to the school has meant to it and to them individually, but those of us, whether boys or masters, who have worked in close association for the last few years with them, have a much deeper and more personal sense of impend* ing loss,” stated the last issue of the “Collegian.” Mr. aud Mrs. Allens leavetaking will arouse the deepest regret among old boys in New Zealand and overseas by whom they are held in affectionate esteem; Mr. Allen will be succeeded ■by Mr. F. W. Gilligan, a brother of the famous cricketer, who will arrive in Wellington next Wednesday. The chairman, Mr. Currie, eaid the evening marked the occasion upon which the deepest regret was felt at the retirement of one of the trustees, Dr. T. H Sprott, Bishop of Wellington, and Mr. and Mrs. Allen. On behalf of the trustees Mr. Currie said a reluctant goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Allen. Their influence, he said, would live long in the school. Mr. Allen then delivered his annual report, which covered the school activities during the year. He eaid it was a curious coincidence that General Godley should have officiated at the first prize-giving held in the new assembly hall in 1911, and that the present holder of his office, 24 years later, Sir William W. H. L. Sin-clair-Burgess, should perform a similar duty. He thanked the staff for their loyal co-operation, and the trustees for their assistance given willingly at all times. He also referred to the retirement of Bishop Sprott. who had a long association with the school, and who was held in the highest esteem. It was with deep regret that he and Mrs. Allen bade farewell to the school, at which they had spent so many happy and pleasant years. Referring to his successor, Mr. Allen said he was sure Mr. Gilligan would receive the same measure of co-operation and loyalty which had been extended to him. , , The function concluded with the school song and the National Anthem.
