WELLINGTON EAST GIRLS

Breaking-up Ceremony o “It has been an educational miracle to me to see this college grow from nothing,” said the Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of Education, at the prize-giving ceremony of Wellington East Girl’s College, held in the Wellington College Memoriae Hall yesterday afternoon. Mr. Fraser said he knew the year s work had been a good one, for it always had been so with Wellington East. Hte memory went, back to the beginnings of the college—indeed further, right to the beginning of the idea of the college. A magnificent spirit had been born in it in its very first year, and had been kept alive ever since. . The Mayor, Mr. T. O. A. Hislop, said he was glad to think of the school progressing. This was due not only to the foundation upon which it had been built, and the assistance rendered by the State,' but also to the enthusiastic work of the principal and staff, with the co-opera-tion of the pupils. If the effect of your schooling on your mind has been good, then it has been worthwhile,” .said Mr. Hislop. “Happiness does not come from outward things, although many spend all their lives pursuing a goal they may never reach. Happiness is born from within, based on a happy and contented mind. , . . Referring to mention in the principals report of iack ot an assembly hall, Mr. G. Mitchell, chairman of the College Board of Governors, said the ground was clear, and the building could be proceeded with right away. ■ Parents and helpers had contributed for a number of years, and the fund now stood at about £5OO. He thought he could commit the board to a contribution from its funds. The year had been noticeable for fhe large number of girls leaving during the year to take up work of all kinds, said the principal, Miss A. M. Batham. in presenting her annual report. There had been no lack of positions offering, but it. was regretted that a large proportion of these girls had not thought it worth while to complete the year in order to gain, say a senior free place certificate, which would have entitled them to continue interesting classes. She felt that, it was quite time that there should be some other method of granting senior free places. Many parents apparently did not realise the value of a good education, and had allowed their girls to take up "blind alley” positions for a few weeks at Christmas, with nothing to show at the end except a little pocket money. “I feel that some of the free places should be withheld until the end of the year, and then given to girls who have really worked hard for the two years, irrespective of their being particularly bright or not. but who are honestly keen to carry on their education. “After many years of experience, and with much pei'sonal regret, I have at Inst come to the conclusion that fnr too many of our girls are attempting Latin nowadays,” she said. "Far more use to such girls would bo more English, more modern history and geography and some biology. I hope people will not think I do not approve of Latin, as a subject. We. who have studied ■ Latin .in our vouth, all know the value of it, but I think we are apt to forget that times and manners have changed considerably since we were at school or at the university.’ Prizes were presented by the Mayoress.
