Wellington Offer to Makara County MEETING OF COUNCIL Water from (lie cntellliient area from which tlic Newliinds district drew its supply could not be regarded as fit for human consumption, said a letter from the Department of Health, before the Makara County Council yesterday, reporting on a recent inspection - : It had been found that .stock grazed ou tlie area, and there were several abandoned buildings thereon. To ensure a pure supply it would be necessary for the council to take charge of the area. It was decided Hint tlic committee and Cr. C. 11. Phillips should arrange a deputation to present a copy of this letter to the Minister of Public Works. A letter from the town clerk of Wellington announced that the 'Wellington City Council was prepared to supply the Ngahauranga area with water from the Gear Island source, at a charge of 1/0 per 1000 gallons. The conditions provided that the water was to puss through a meter, the supply and upkeep of which were to be borne by the Makara council. All fittings were to be of the standard required in ■Wellington city, and the City Council would not be responsible for failure of the supply. In cases of emergency tlic right was retained to cut off the water without payment of compensation, .and the supply could be terminated after three months’ notice. The motion of Cr. E. Windley that the conditions be referred to the committee of the council for consideration and report was adopted. The Titahi Bay Tennis and Bowling Club asked for remission of the general rate, a privilege granted for some years past. A copy of the balance-sheet revealed a credit balance of £59/14/2. It was decided that the rate be remitted. Holidays for the staff were fixed as follow: —Inside staff: December 23, 1935. to January 13, 1930. Outside staff: December 24, 1935, to January 6, 1930. On the motion of the chairman, Cr. R, G. Mexted, seconded by Cr. J. Purchase, it was decided to increase the foreman’s wages to £1 per day. lie worked long and irregular hours, said the chairman, and he thought the £275 a year at present paid was not sufficientrecompense. The foreman's wages had been cut from 22/0 a day to about 17/-, aud although other cuts had been re; stored, his had not. Cr. E. Windley moved that the charwoman’s wage cut also be restored, and this, too, was agreed to. The next meeting of the council was fixed for Friday, January 17.
