SURPRISE CAUSED BY DE VALERA
Important Announcement Promised London. September 29. According to the “Sunday Express,” which alone publishes the story. Mr. E. de Valera. President of the Irish Free State, yesterday telephoned from Geneva, convening an open-air meeting at Ennis on October 6 for the purpose of making an important announcemeat.
The “Sunday Express” says, that Dublin political circles are conjecturing whether Mr. de Valera will announce an honourable settlement of tlie Anglo-Irish dispute. Some say that only for such an announcement wqutd Mr. de Valera take such a step. Another explanation of the mystery is that Mr. de Valera intends on his own doorstep to flay the critics of his Geneva speech as committing the Free State’s man-power in the event of war and also forging a new link with Imperialism. Others predict that he will simply nsp the occasion to reiterate the Republican aim. “I have nothing to say." was the comment of Mr. J. H. Thomas, Secretary of State for the Dominions.
