Death During State of Depression

Dominion Special Service.

Foxton, August 29.

A corouial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of John Storry, single, aged 38. who was found dead in the Albion Hotel, Shamiou, on Tuesday morning, was conducted by Mr. J. K. Hornblow, coroner, yesterday. James Curran, licensee, said that Storry resided at his hotel. He had known him for six years. Lately he became depressed, and witness went with him to a doctor, who ordered him to enter hospital. They returned to Shannon, anti the next morning witness found him dead in bed with his throat cut. Raymond Robert Lind, contractor, said Storry worked for him. He was off work for some time owing to sickness, and resumed ou Saturday, when lie put in a full day. On Monday he did not appear at work until 11 a.m.. when he said his mates were talking about him. He left at 11.30 a.m. Witness was concerned about him, and that night suggested he should see a doctor, which he agreed to do. Witness took him to Palmerston North for this purpose. Constable Blaikie described an examination of deceased, and the finding of a razor alongside the body. Deceased had suffered a good deal from accidents during the past twelve months, and had become depressed. He was a native, of Scotland, and had been in the Dominion six years, and had no relatives here., A statement from the doctor who examined him showed that it had not been thought that deceased was an urg’ent case, as he did not show any symptoms of disease of the nervous organs. Storry had readily agreed to enter hospital the next day for treatment and observation. At the time of the interview it was tob late to admit him ' then.

The coroner returned a verdict that deceased had met his death.by committing suicide while in a state of depression.

HARRIER CONTEST

Benson Trophy Race at Masterton Alasterton, August 29. Approximately thirty members of the Wanganui Harrier Club will visit Masterton during the week-end to compete against the Masterton Harrier Club in the second race for, the Bensou trophy. The first race this year was held at Wanganui, the Masterton team being beaten by a margin of 98 points, and on Saturday afternoon the local club will be hardpressed to maintain its unbroken record of wins on the home course.

The visitors will arrive at about 11.30 a.m., and will be entertained at lunch at the Empire Hotel, where they will be officially welcomed by Messrs. T. Jordan and G. R. Sykes, M.P. The race will be conducted over two laps of the championship course, and sealed handicaps will be held for both teams, trophies for the various winners to be presented by the home ohib. After the race the women’s committee will entertain the visitors and their billeters at afternoon tea in the Social Hall, while a dance will be held in the evening. On Sunday morning the visitors and billeters will be entertained at morning tea at the residence of Mr. G. Shaw. Te Ore Ore, patron of the Masterton club, and the presentation of the “gate" and other trophies will then take place.

AMATEUR WRESTLING

Masterton and Eketahuna Clubs

Masterton, August 29.

There was a fair attendance in the Dixon Street , gymnasium this evening when amateur wrestlers from the Masterton and Eketahuna clubs met in a friendly match. The former secured four wins to the latter’s three, while out bout was drawn. The bouts were very fast and willing, the wrestlers showing sound knowledge of the various holds. Mr. J. Fearon was the referee. Following are the details: A. Southey (Masterton), 8.6, beat J. Searancke (Eketahuna). 9.2, by one fall to nil; N. Harris (Eketahuna), 9.0, beat J. Tozer (Masterton), 8.10, by one fall to nil: N. Olsen (Eketahuna), 10.0, beat K. Page (Masterton). 10.0, by one fall to nil; G. Allhway (Masterton). 10.12, beat D. Searancke (Eketahuna), 10.5, on points; McGlashan (Eketahuna). 10.4, beat R. Edwards (Masterton), 10.2, by twp falls to nil; Ruesell (Maeterton), 10.7, beat Nielson (Eketahuna), 10.12, on points; H. Chappel (Maeterton), 11.3, beat N.. Murphy (Eketahuna), 11.7, by two falls to nil; A. Rasmussen (Masterton), 11.5, drew with Tweedie (Eketahuna), 11.2. During the evening interesting exhibition bouts were provided by. I. Sutherland (Maeterton) and J. Hutchison (Masterton) and A. Searancke and J. Nielsen* both of Eketahuna.
