RAILWAY RESERVE

Feilding Scheme For Beautification

Feilding, August 29. For the purpose of conferring with the Mayor, Mr. T. Collins, and the town clerk, Mr. C. H. Tate,'relative to the proposals put forward by the Feilding Borough Council for the beautification of vacant sections of land owned by the Railway Department and situated opposite the local railway station, officers of the district railway engineer’s office, Wanganui, visited Feilding yesterday. The views of the Borough Council were placed before the visitors by the Mayor, who pointed out that in their present state the sections detrimentally affected the town. The council’s idea was to, take over the sections on lease at a purely nominal rental and to beautify them. _ During the course of a lengthy discussion, it was stated that failing the purchase of the properties at a valuation based upon present-day values by the borough, the Railway Department would very likely entertain the idea of a lease without any fixed term since it was not desired to do anything that would become a bar to their sale or lease for some other purpose. The view was also expressed that, in the event of a lease being arranged upon terms mutually satisfactory, it would not be desirable to go in for any substantial improvements a§ once such were established it might prove difficult to make an ultimate disposal of the property. The wishes of the borough are to be brought before the department, and it is considered likely that a satisfactory arrangement will be reached.
